The first day with no new deaths but BBC Scotland have darker and inaccurate messages to worry you

In ‘Coronavirus in Scotland: Key figures and trends’, today, there is a great deal of information with 8 graphs and tables but not one mention of the encouraging news that for the first time since March, no deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours. It’s not the end, we know that, but surely it’s worth a mention.

They do get round to it in a separate post but doesn’t the graph above, which they present, call out for a comment?

Instead we get:

The figures show that 2,415 patients in Scotland have died after a positive test for Covid-19, although the actual number of deaths is known to be far higher.

The actual cumulative number of infections will be far higher, as most people who have Covid-19 are not tested.

‘Far higher?’ There are numbers available. Why not just say what they are and let us judge if they are ‘far higher’ or just ‘higher?’

The over-75s are particularly vulnerable to Covid-19 and more than half of all deaths from the virus in Scotland have now been in care homes.

This is wrong. Here are the official data:

https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/covid19stats

46% of the deaths have been in care homes, 46% have been in hospitals with the remainder at home or in some other unspecified institution.

The coronavirus outbreak is creating a huge load on Scotland’s hospitals and its intensive care unit capacity.

That’s wrong too. See their own graph:

There are less than 40 patients in icu’s, down from 220, and:

A Scottish Intensive Care Society Audit Group (SICSAG) report shows there has been more than enough ICU beds to deal with the impact of the crisis. By the time the first positive case of COVID-19 in Scotland was confirmed, NHS Scotland health boards were working towards doubling ICU capacity. Boards now have the capability to provide 585 ICU beds, increased from 173, and continue to plan towards being able to quadruple capacity to more than 700 beds if required. Due to the extra beds, ICUs had the capacity to cope even at the peak of COVID-19 admissions in April.

  2. I closely monitor all cases and deaths for Scotland UK England and Norway
Scotland now up to level with Norway on testing so fair to presume we can now test track and isolate as Norway has been doing
But very worryingly the No.of new cases in England are in a very bad trend and if such continues then a major problem for Scotland arises
One that WILL require border controls
    Constitutional cris

    1. You could well be right. Scotland and England, like on so many things, will further diverge over the health crisis and its consequences. The bbc will still do down Scotland at every opportunity.

      1. I by error on my prev.message wrongly pushed post comment button W/O
Giving back up data supporting my argument Re we will probably need to
Introduce Border control with England and here why
Data is from 1.6.20 to 7.6.20
Scotland is 9.8% of English population
So you can see the differential in % terms 1.Scotland.increase of cases = + 173 i.e 7.1 % of England no +2438 no.
        2 Scotland increase no
        .of deaths = +53 i.e.3.85 % of England no.= +1379 no.

        These figs.demonstrate quite clearly
        a) England is incurring more new cases
Proportionally than Scotland and the gap is growing daily
        b) England death rate is now in the past 7 days over twice that of Scotland
So only are they not only incurring more cases but even more disproportionate deaths
This demonstrates clearly that Scotland has far better infection control and far superior outcome of those infected
I assure you that each day since easing of lock down the disparities are relentlessly increasing
If such continues for the next 10 days
Then a constitutional legal crisis shall arise if and when Scotland requests powers to control the border
We simply cannot throw away the sterling efforts of our government, peoples and SHNS for 1000,s of infected English to cross our Border
I ask currently how many others from England travel/ enter Scotland each day by Train & Air far less by road alone
If this comes to pass No other Nation on this planet would ever tolerate such a highly infectious killer disease cross their borders completely unhindered
This is not only a matter of Health
But of economic costs of Scotland going backwards in lock down
But of far greater matter is one of OUR DIGNITY & HONOUR
Something no proud Nation Ever yields lightly and without a fight in the face of blatant resitance from their neighbours
If this comes to pass the gloves must come off and we MUST Stand our Ground
Wha will stand for Scotlands Honour
Wha will fill a traitors grave
        Let them turn & flee

    2. Scotland performance in health is shameful…excess deaths is worse than Wales and NI with a tiny population density Holyrood continues to fail our nation we should be embarrassed and hold our heads in shame. Sturgeon is incompetent

BBC Scotland we see you! Tonight’s BBC 1 UK news at c. 1900 hours refers to a large ‘black life matters’ protest in Glasgow and the presenter mentions that its attendees did attempt social distancing.

This was followed by a similar item on the news ‘where we are’ from BBC Scotland. No reference here to attempts at social distancing but use of pictures from a camera lens that foreshortened the scene making it appear to be a dense crowd. Accurate representation?

Why am I so suspicious of – so sensitised to – news coverage from BBC Scotland? Once trust goes it’s hard to regain!!

  4. ‘46% of the deaths have been in care homes, 46% have been in hospitals with the remainder at home or in some other unspecified institution.’
Thanks for clarifying that. I felt gaslit.

travellingtabby appears to update that particular graphic weekly and i was eager to see their update (should be very soon) as i couldn’t see how it could change so dramatically in one week.
So the answer is we are being lied to again.
I notice that some media are also reporting care homes and private homes differently.
