Andrew Marr gets the death rates all wrong to conceal England’s figures

Talking to Arlene Foster, this morning, Marr says the deaths rates are:

  • In N Ireland: 26 per 100 000
  • 46 per 100 000 in England and Wales
  • 51 in Scotland

The source is not declared. Given the devolved covid-19 strategies, it’s not clear why the England & Wales figures are grouped. Anyhow the actual figures are:

From worldometers in https://www.travellingtabby.com/scotland-coronavirus-tracker/

So per 100 000

  • Scotland 43.3
  • England 61.1
  • Wales 42.4
  • N Ireland 27.8

And, of course, even these figures are unreliable compared with the excess mortality scores or Z-scores:

Z-scores:
England: peak 43.5 in week 15, now 31.52 in week 18
Scotland: peak at 15.65 in week 15, now 5.82 in week 18
NI peak 8.8 in week 15, now -1.1 in week 18
Wales peak 19.76 in week 15, now 2.44 in week 18

  1. It requires the Scottish government to officially complain to the BBC, and insist on the same parameters being deployed in each of the Home nations.

  2. Do you seriously believe that these little collie dugs would ever dare to go against the commands whistled out by their masters
And i kindly remind you all that such dog whistles are minaudible to us all bar the lapdogs
We only get to hear it when they appear on honours lists etc.
Tis they that in fact are actually stupid and not the sheep they imagine us to be
Their kennel door shall be firmly closed for ever upon independence then the poor wee beastie shall find their masters boot upon their arse
Just as all colonial masters do as their authority is extinguished

    1. And it also explains why a brilliant Andrew Neil’s uncomfortable questioning on the now-coincidentally-shut-down Daily and Sunday Politics AND the Politics Live reduced programme had to be taken off air!

Too embarrassing for the inept Tories to deal with when Neil forensically probed beyond their obvious, pre-planned, shallow lies!

Thanks, BBC! You are a shameful let-down!

Don’t ever ask for a fee from me again!

  3. When I heard Andrew Marr this morning I realised he was wrong and my calculations confirmed those of Talking-up-Scotland. It should be noted that the death numbers are for confirmed cases provided by Health Protection Scotland and Public Health England. Where Andrew Marr’s figures came from is anybody’s guess but one has to wonder whether this is just incompetence or deliberate misinformation. As someone who trained in Public Health many years ago I am frequently appalled at the ignorance of journalists in the fields of statistics and epidemiology. Hardly ever do they give the source of their figures or ask any questions about the methodology of surveys. It is good to see Talking-Up-Scotland asking these questions. Keep up the good work.

  4. Seriously this distortion of the news goes on far far too often with the BBC and I would like to hear from the Scot Gov about what they are doing to challenge this misinformation. This has got to stop and if they have not done it so far the SNP and the Scot Gov need to shame them publicIy or at the very least put out press releases and combat this at the daily Briefings which I see the UK Gov are doing to announce non virus related stuff. They are getting away with murder and Scots are being misled.

    1. Now that’s a VERY good question!

Putting evidence-based rebuttals into the public domain does not mean necessarily much coverage by the corporate media and the BBC.

But just knowing it was being attempted would be damn helpful to the morale of SNP and other independence supporters!

Announcing such an action and failing to deliver is morale sapping.

  5. I think this is no ‘error’ but part of the news strategy for today. The Sunday Times had stuff on how ‘’bad’ Scotland’s data are. The purpose of this is to repeat a lie to get it to lodge in people’s minds. They are responding to the growing perception that the SG and the FM are doing a good job and the the PM’s and the Westminster Government’s plummeting credibility.

Wuggie Rennie was quoted uncritically in his assertion that many have died from other causes because treatments had been reduced to get NHS Scotland ready for Covid19.

The Herod had two pieces by CARE HOME OWNERS claiming that it is all the fault of the SG. Expect the Labour supporting unions to take up this cry.

    1. The Herald now has a story on its web site stating that Scotland has one of the the worst death rate in the world – or something along those lines. Some statistician has provided the figures apparently

      1. The Scottish Government – or the SNP – I don’t care which, needs a root and branch review of media/public communications strategy and resourcing, and the need for/ efficacy of a just in time rebuttal function.

This is getting beyond a joke!

Yes there is opinion poll evidence that this crap is being recognised for what it is. However, the future of our country is on the line and there is zero scope for complacency or risk here.

And if nothing is done can the talent and reach of the pro-indy online media be aggregated and amplified (and reach extended) to fill the void?

  6. As I watched Marr say this, I thought to myself you can almost see his string being pulled, I also decided if this deliberate lying was going to be the style of the show today just switch off.

But Marrs lies may explain what happened to the “gogglebox show ” on Friday. I was fully expecting the gogglebox crew to have a go at Boris and Cummings like they did after Boris’s statement a couple of wks back, in fact I was looking forward to it.

Instead the Friday show was a repeat from about a month back, WHY ? , was something said they didn’t want us to see.

  7. I was so annoyed yesterday I complained straight away to the BBC. Couldn’t even get any figures correct.

The Scottish Government needs to take this matter up and get the true facts out.
