Ruth Davidson’s claim of higher care home deaths in Scotland totally disproved by London School of Economic researchers. It’s lower

Gleefully spreading lies, along with her colleagues such as Jackson Carlaw, Ruth Davidson wrote in the Sun and shouted on GMB yesterday to perpetuate a myth based entirely on England’s failure to properly record deaths in care homes.

Along with most of the mainstream media, she has ignored the data from research by LSE, reported on May 14th in Care Home Professional:

More than 22,000 care home residents in England and Wales have died during the coronavirus pandemic, according to new research. In a new paper, the LSE said data on deaths had underestimated the impact of the pandemic on care home residents as it did not take into account the indirect mortality effects of the pandemic and/or because of problems with the identification of the disease as the cause of death. The paper said current data only accounted for an estimated 41.6% of all excess deaths in care homes.

In Scotland, up to 17th May there were 1 623 deaths in care homes where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The population of England and Wales is 59 million, 10.7 times that of Scotland at 5.5 million so, all things being equal you might expect the death rate to be 10.7 times 1 623 or 17 366.

The actual care home death rate based on the LSE research is more than 22 000 and thus higher than in Scotland.

  1. There are a few key factors it seems to me everyone in Scotland should consider when listening and then assessing the value of what Ruth Davidson says – about ‘anything’!

    (1) can the supposed objective, factual content of her statements be tested and confirmed by independent, authoritative evidence? In this case it seems not.

    (2) as a party politician, is she spinning in order to present her political opponents – especially those in government – in a bad light? It’s arguable that all (well perhaps not every) party politician does this but perhaps less so (- we the voters might reasonably expect) during a deadly public health emergency.

    (3) as an avowed British Nationalist/Unionist, is she motivated to decry on this or indeed any topic, the capability/capacity of a Scottish Government and of Scotland’s institutions to form the basis of a successful independent nation state – and is she motivated to promote negativity on this capability/capacity in ways that help turn voters against even a mature re-consideration of independence? Well yes, of course she is, relentlessly!

  2. She is being wheeled out as a act of desperation by her masters in London
To stick her sticky fingers in the cracking dam
Suggest they rapidly re deploy her as targeting commander for the British Army main battle tank group
So their completely outdated challenger tanks can be smashed to smithereens by the superiorily equipped foe and she can wave her little Union jack as all under her command perish
Then have her epitaph as a glorious victory
    Against over whelminv

    Against over whelming forces
Which might just be the Swiss army who not only can deploy tanks in far greater numbers but of a modern up to date capability
Such is the fantasy land they inhabit
Whereas what i speak of is more credible

  4. There has to be a law against this level of lying and the media which publish it without question. This lie and the ‘more care home deaths than hospitals’ lie.
The care home deaths have been more than 50% since the peak of the deaths in last week of April but not before that and for the last 3 weeks the care homes have dropped a little each week so they are unlikely to ever become the main source of deaths. Overall the care home deaths are 46% and dropping each week.
Why do the MSM never point out this major lie.
Jons-un in parliament t claimed that charging non-UK NHS staff would make the government 900 million. I may be wrong but by my calculation that was a ten fold lie. There are 153,000 overseas workers in the NHS and the Surcharge was going to be raised to £624 in October so that would raise 95.5 million.
I haven’t heard of any media pointing out this lie but i may have missed it .

  5. Death RATE. That’s what she said. How can you sit and write that article and do nonsense math by multiplying it by 10 to compare it to a death total? You calculate it RELATIVE to the population.

This is what you call “fake news” by the way.

    Absolute nonsense.
