Scotland’s covid-19 accurate death rate half UK average

In the Scotsman today but with no mention of the Scottish rate in their headline. Ach, ‘Scotsman’, it’s only a name. It doesn’t mean anything.

It’s behind their paywall but was probably triggered by this shocking report only two days ago in the FT:

https://www.ft.com/content/67e6a4ee-3d05-43bc-ba03-e239799fa6ab

The coronavirus pandemic has already caused as many as 41,000 deaths in the UK, according to a Financial Times analysis of the latest data from the Office for National Statistics. The estimate is more than double the official figure of 17,337 released by ministers on Tuesday, which is updated daily and only counts those who have died in hospitals after testing positive for the virus. The FT extrapolation, based on figures from the ONS that were also published on Tuesday, includes deaths that occurred outside hospitals updated to reflect recent mortality trends.

Readers will know that the Scottish statistics have for some time now counted all deaths which occurred outside hospitals. The FT seemed not to have noticed this change.

In Scotland:

As at 19th April, there have been a total of 1616 deaths registered in Scotland where the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was mentioned on the death certificate.

https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/files//statistics/covid19/covid-deaths-report-week-16.pdf

The UK population is 12.36 times higher than that of Scotland. If the UK death rate was the same as that of Scotland, there would have been almost 20 000 deaths but the ONS predicts 41 000. The UK average rate is thus likely to be more than twice as high.

The UK figures include within them the lower Scottish figures so the difference between the English death rate [curiously not published] and the Scottish one would be even more stark.

Had it been the other way round, the Scottish Government and NHS Scotland would have suffered death by a thousand media cuts so it is appropriate to consider why this has happened.

We saw in allegedly pro-Independence National yesterday, the Scottish government accused of being too slow to lock-down so it can’t be that.

To repeat myself, these factors can surely be considered:

  • NHS Scotland’s higher staffing ratio.
  • Scotland’s hospitals with their in-house cleaning did not have mass Norovirus closures last winter as NHS England did.
  • NHS Scotland’s vastly superior A&E performance.
  • Scotland’s 50 unique coronavirus assessment centres keeping infected patients away from GP surgeries.
  • Urban Scots have obeyed the social distancing rules more than their counterparts in the South.

I have the evidence for all these claims. They’re easy found.

  1. Well you are the only one giving these figures so keep them coming, England keeps quoting UK figures , they are scared stiff to say England only numbers , if the MSM would report the true numbers the English would be kicking the Tories out ! .

  2. Fret not for the day of reckoning is coming
Unless behind the scenes.the death certificates in England from deaths other than hospitals are not stating death was due to covid 19 or covid was a factor
Surely these certificates are a matter of public record and soon someday a organisation or individual is going to delve into them and report accordingly
But be aware cunning devious governance only have to sow the seed of doubt with regards accuracy pertaining to statistics

    1. Several times in the last week or so Ch4 news has covered the issue of what is or is not being put on death certificates with regard to Covid-19. A whistleblower alerted them to what was happening in at least one Trust area in England.

The Good Law Project became involved. This from Ann’s links on the indyref2.space

“”last week we revealed flawed, leaked guidance likely to lead to an NHS Trust under-reporting Covid-19 deaths… well GoodLawProject sent them a pre-action letter and they’ve conceded EVERYTHING.

  4. I am truly ignorant of politics so please excuse my ignorance but don’t the Scottish government have a publicity team that can show this astonishing disparity. Every day i wait for someone mainstream to point this out. I have only my partner to shout at. Do we have to wait years for some official report when peoples attention spans have moved back to some celebrity dancing/baking/sewing/breathing contest?
It really isn’t that difficult to compare average 5/10/15 year death rates with 2020 to see what is being hidden. MSM do your job.

My partner is Danish. She got back to the UK on the 8th of March 3 days before their lockdown. That time is remembered well (otherwise memory is hopeless) because i had also been visiting in England and helping the decision making family members who were abroad or intending to go abroad. The comparison with Denmark is easy to see but it is equally valid in Ireland, Norway etc.

    From https://bylinetimes.com/2020/04/22/the-coronavirus-crisis-denmarks-gold-standard-response/
‘When Denmark locked down on 11 March, they had identified 514 cases compared to the UK’s 456. In the six weeks since the lockdown, Denmark has suffered just 370 deaths and 7,695 cases. Compare and contrast to the UK. The UK did not enter lockdown until 23 March – 7 weeks after the first UK case was reported on 31st January. Since then, (as of 21 April) the UK has reported over 129,044 cases and over 17,000 hospital deaths.’

If find it incomprehensible that with information like that the UK public still think Kim Jons-un is doing a good job with covid-19.
I have been re-watching the excellent Burns documentary series ‘Vietnam’ in which it states that 58% of Americans supported the Kent State shootings which included the murder of 4 students. It made me realise that our stupidity is unchanged. And we can no longer pretend we are better than americans. We have arrived!

Also extremely puzzled why the majority of the UK public trusts the press less than Kim Jons-un in covid-19. I don’t watch or read MSM because they lie about just about everything but are they really lying about the pandemic and more so, by a massive amount, than our very own moron and his muppets?

    From Sky
‘ 51% of people say they trust Mr Johnson to handle coronavirus, while 39% say they do not trust him, giving him an overall net score of 12

24% say they trust TV journalists while 64% say they do not, giving a net score of minus 40.

17% say they trust newspaper journalists, while 72% say they do not, giving an overall net score of minus 55.’

And the public trust the scientific advisers
‘42% saying they trust [Professor Chris Whitty] and 17% saying they do not, giving him a higher net overall score than the prime minister, at 25.

Sir Patrick Vallance, the chief scientific officer, is trusted by 25% and not trusted by 17%, giving him an overall net score of eight.’

    1. Remember history often shows that in the initial stage of a real and lasting crisis the ratings of those in power and charge increases
But once the awful truth of their gross incompetence of their actions leaks out
Then that support withers away and turns to fury
Westminster knows this all too well and currently they are akin to the fire brigade pissing on a fire that will soon be out of control

      1. That appears to be true although i don’t understand it. I think perhaps it is difference between public opinion in the moment versus the long term scrutiny of more intellectual analysis. That same Vietnam documentary reminds us that the guilty verdict of Sec. Lieut William Calley was opposed by about 79% of americans. And although he is looked on as a war criminal today any current war criminals are given presidential pardons. WE never seem to learn meanwhile anyone who exposes all this is imprisoned here in the UK as well as the US.
Sorry it is hard not to rant after watching Vietnam.
