Health Secretary acts to prevent hospital-acquired infection of coronavirus as cases begin to emerge in NHS England

Readers will know that the Health Secretary, Jeanne Freeman, has ordered that all NHS Scotland staff be checked for coronavirus and that NHS England do not intend to do so, for capacity reasons.

Writing in the Guardian yesterday, a consultant cardiologist working in England reported a case of an elderly woman, in for an elective operation, who had caught the virus and subsequently died. He is horrified that NHS England staff will not be tested and fears that widespread contamination of staff and of patients who have not been admitted for coronavirus infection, has already taken place.

The Scottish Health Secretary’s actions make sense though there have been no comparable cases here. The first mortality in Scotland was a French rugby supporter who had arrived already infected and the second case was infected in a care home.

It’s important that the Health Secretary’s actions are recognised given common media attacks on her in the past:

  1. Just heard John Beattie interview scottish based GP

JB “have you been tested for Coronavirus”
    GP: No

JB: have any of your colleagues been tested for CV
    GP: No

JB : do you know anyone who has been tested fir CV
    GP: No

    JB: Thats Shocking!

How about interviewing Jason Leitch and asking him about the time table for rolling out testing of Scotland’s front line health care professionals.

  2. See this is what Radio Scotland do , it is their default position , they ask half a question from a selected someone , (why that particular someone is selected we can only guess) , then they leave it there , making you agitated that there has been no reponse.
Oh for the days when we had journalists and not “pretenders” , sorry “presenters ” ! .
