Barking & Havering Herald exposes Barking and Havering Hospital

By Helen Curdled, Health Correspondent

A report today by the Care Quality Commission has condemned Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust as unsafe.

BBC Barking & Havering Health Correspondent, Lucy Sommers, has described the board as ‘dysfunctional.’

The report states:

  • Learning from serious incidents (SIs) was not always shared with staff.
  • The trust lacked effective systems and processes to assess and monitor the risk of harm to patients because of delayed access to appointments or long waits for treatment.
  • There was a shortage of middle grade medical staff working within urgent and emergency services. However, the trust had gone someway to mitigating this by introducing assistant nurse practitioners and advanced clinical practitioners.
  • Patient records were not always stored securely. Patient records were predominantly paper and there were sometimes delays in locating them.
  • The trust provided mandatory training in key skills for all staff, however compliance rates varied across core services.
  • Infection prevention and control (IPC) was predominantly well managed across services, although we saw examples of inconsistent staff compliance with IPC best practice guidance in some core services.
  • Most staff understood their responsibilities for duty of candour, although we found variable understanding among staff in some services.

Health Minister Nick Hancock was unavailable for comment, but his wife said:

‘I don’t think this is anything to do with Nick. Leave us alone.’

  1. Have you read this piece yet John? Apparently the coronavirus affects independence,,, I’ve only read the headline – it would be interesting to hear if there was anything close to a rational argument in it ,,, 😉

On health issues: GMS on radio Scotland are actually doing very good reporting on coronavirus (and are totally ignoring the Alex Salmond trial, which is interesting), interviewing experts and trying to answer real people’s concerns.

I am sort-of self isolating just now – I’m not in any way in a risk group (but you never really know eh) but I do have a cold with a cough – on the principle that everyone will need their strength to fight off a more serious virus that’s likely to spread (coronavirus) so don’t need any kind of cold before then. I generally don’t spread & I’m fairly obsessive with hand washing etc anyway, but it’s a precaution. I think we all have to consider personal responsibility and judgement to try and not spread any diseases just now. I won’t be imposing a two week isolation mind you, just until I’m not coughing/snotty.

I really worry about the English NHS though, they really don’t have the capacity to deal with an influx of critical patients, so I hope any epidemic is contained,,, or are we on delay now? Huh, for all I’ve been paying attention, I’ve perhaps got information overload!

      1. Thanks!

Electronic communications only! – at least I’m lucky enough to have work that allows sick days & a boss who is fully supportive of not seeing me at all until I’m better. I’m not feeling weak or feverish, just bunged up, so might manage a short walk if the rain stays off for half an hour – no virus is staying alive for long in our great outdoors!
