JO SWINSON could be set to make a dramatic return to frontline politics with reports that the failed LibDem leader is heading to Holyrood to replace Willie Rennie.

According to the Press and Journal, the North East Fife MSP is “keen” to see a fresh face take over in 2021.

(Presumably Rennie being punted out due to his over-zealous application of whitewash re. the ‘Sir’ Cyril Smith scandal?).

  1. I do however recognise your editorial sagacity in THAT photie choice – The P+J piece does report Rennie’s wish for a “..fresh face..” to take over.(’nuff said).

  2. I do not think that Ms Swinson would be seriously interested in Holyrood. I think she still has her main residence in England and she has never shown any real interest in Scottish politics other than to refuse any attempts for Scotland to become independent. In the Con/LibDem Coalition, it is said that she outdid the Tories in her zeal for austerity. I suspect she would want to go to the Lords and to get places on the boards of various city companies. Look at (“Sir”) Danny Alexander, Nick Clegg’s bag carrying job with Bill Gates and David Laws escaping jail for expenses fiddling greater than those for which people like the drunken Jim Devine were rightly jailed.

Wee Wuggie has spent a lot of time at Holyrood without making much impact other than voicing a stream of inanities which the Scottish media gave generous air time to. He missed out on being part of the Lab/LibDem Holyrood Executive and his party has sunk even more than Labour. So, he has no prospect of power anywhere in Scotland. He has egg on his face with regard to the Cyril Smith/David Steel affair and were the Scottish LibDems not such a microgroup, he would have had his jotters by now.He will probably seek a constituency in England, where in areas the LibDems have possibilities which are hostile to the Tories but see Labour as unpalatable. I suspect that, as was done for Alistair Carmichael’s legal costs the Rowntree Foundation (not the philanthropic one, but the Lib Dem controlled one) grandees will find something to tide him over.

  3. Rennie’s likely departure from Holyrood is no surprise – I have it on good authority that for a while he’s been much more interested in his long distance running than politics. (e.g. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Willie-Rennie )

On the same authority, in 2018, he rated Cole-Hamilton as the likely next Lib Dem leader after the 2021 Holyrood election. But now could we have Mr Cole-Hamilton and Ms Swinson competing for the key(!) position of Lib Dem Scotland leader? Exciting isn’t it!
