Many Labour, Lib Dem and even some Tory supporters would vote for independence

From YouGov today, based on 2 587 Scottish adults (18+?), on 7th to 14th February, but with a non-standard question, the result is once more too close to call. Of particular interest, however, is the large number of Labour supporters (31%), the fair number of Lib Dem supporters (14%) and even some Tory supporters (4%) who would vote for independence.

The referendum question in 2014 was, “Should Scotland be an independent country?”

The question used by YouGov, above, might be seen as having removed those in favour of independence in a year or more but not now. Support for this view can be found in the later question on when a second referendum should be held with only 17% agreeing that it should be now and only 40% agreeing that it should be within the next one or two years.

  1. “…a second referendum should be held with only 17% agreeing that it should be now and only 40% agreeing that it should be within the next one or two years.”

So 57% say within 2 years.

  2. Whether there is majority support for a new referendum is irrelevant. There need only be significant demand. After that, it’s a matter for the government to decide whether a referendum is warranted. In coming to a decision on this they will take due account of a number of relevant criteria. Level of public demand being only one of these.

While it heartening to see that democracy is still relatively popular in Scotland, the fact that 27% are opposed to or indifferent about democracy should be a matter for concern. As, of course, should be the fact that support for Yes continues to languish at least ten points below where it should be.
