NHS Scotland achieves fall in mortality from heart disease by 35% in last decade

There has been a steady downward trend in deaths from coronary heart disease in Scotland and the rest of the UK over the last ten years. In Scotland, the mortality rate fell by 35.5% between 2008 and 2017. However, the rate of decline has slowed in the last five years with increases in 2015 for both sexes and in the males rate only for 2017.

Could this achievement be mainly down to better staffing in Scotland? So, as always here, find below a list of a few bits of evidence not mentioned much in our MSM:

  1. I think its down to improvements in healthcare . Primary PCI is now tge treatment of choice and the GJNH is the second busiest centre in the uk . The smoking ban will also have a significant part to play.

I think this improvement is mainly due to the changes in ambulance service – effectively working triage so those people needing immediate treatment are seen to first, so that it isn’t just about meeting ambulance waiting times, but determining which are the more urgent. Not nice if you have a broken wrist and have to wait half an hour or more, but if they can save a life in that time while yours isn’t in danger, who can argue.

    It’s quite a remarkable improvement in survival rates of people having heart attacks. And tells us that how things are done is just as important as that it is done at all.
