BBC Scotland’s NHS obsession leads them to headline an English story apparently NOT MUCH ‘in the public interest’ across the UK

Looking at the above three screenshots, yesterday, you might think that this is something new in the long-running Reporting Scotland saga with regular appearances by the Scottish opposition parties ranting against the SNP neglect of use of mesh in surgery and the many suffering women in Scotland. It turns out to be based on an extended report for Victoria Derbyshire which does feature one Scottish woman but which, otherwise, features only English data, English experts and many other English sufferers.

The full online report, in more than 1 000 words, only mentions Scotland three times suggesting that the mesh is still sold in both England and Scotland and, only near the end, reminding readers that it has not been used here since 2018.

Critically, regardless of the Scottish accent, the research was done entirely in NHS ‘trusts.’ There are no trusts in Scotland, only boards. The data on the number of operations using the mesh suggest that around 100 00 were done ‘in England.’ No Scottish data are offered.

Comments from an Oxford professor in England, the Royal College of Surgeons in England and the Department of Health and Social Care in England are heard but no Scottish medics or experts appear.

Is this is a BBC England news story that has been just too tempting for a Scottish health correspondent?

  1. The recent story was about the use of mesh in hernia repairs not the use of mesh in vaginal repairs. The use of mesh in vaginal repairs was stopped in Scotland in 2018 and was suspended in England for most women about the same time.

The comments from Prrofessors and Royal Colleges seem to refer to the use of mesh in hernia ops.
