Bottle recycling – The BBC and Scotland – the news distortion is not even subtle!

By stewartb

The BBC News website this morning (27 April) had the above prominently displayed on its Scotland ‘business’ page – it’s the lead article.

Note the reference to ‘devolved administrations’. And especially note the juxtaposition to a reference to a delayed Scottish scheme. If scanning the headlines on the Scotland ‘business’ page this morning, what message does the casual reader get – ‘Oh dear, not that SNP government ….again!’?

If one clicks on the headline ‘Cash-for-bottle …’ it takes the reader to another BBC News website article. The screenshot below reveals what one finds:

Magically, the headline has changed! Readers are now getting a rather different insight are they not? This is a Westminster government scheme and one delayed following a decision by ministers in Westminster.

This may be a minor matter if taken in isolation but it does not occur in isolation. This is distortion! Why should we believe it is other than deliberate?

  1. Indeed Stewart, it is a deliberate attempt to mislead those ‘grazing’ the headlines – You may not realise ‘the con’ you refer to is now invisible to outsiders – eg I see a similar BBC Scotland page to you but it’s subtly different, a parallel ‘reality’… Viz – If I pull up the BBC’s Scotland page, there is no Politics tab, and every one of the other tabs take you back to the main BBC page – eg If I select the Business tab as you had done, it lands on the BBC.com ‘business’ page…

Had you inserted the link address in your piece, I would probably have been able to view it, but it’s only a matter of time before even that will be closed off with a ‘404’ – The propagandists have new digital toys…

  2. The BBC is the master of the con from downright lying to subliminal advertising. Watch any BBC Scottish sitcom and I’ll guarantee you will see whisky of a certain type, a can of Irn Bru on a table, frequent mention of a certain brand of High Street bakery Greggs, canned soups by Baxter or Campbell and that’s just from Still Game.

  3. The BBC reporting of Scottish NHS waiting lists being lengthy without any reference to England’s being worse. Or how Scotland’s NHS performance on A&E waiting times, ambulance response times etc all out perform those in England or Wales.
