In Scotland:
In 2021, the rate, or risk, of new cancers also increased to 644 per 100,000 [around 700 for men and 600 for women (an increase of 3.1% compared with 2019).
In England, in 2020, the rate for men was 590 and for women, 487.
These are significant differences.
There are several explanatory factors including smoking (England lowest 13%, Scotland next at 13.9%, N Ireland at 14% and Wales at 14.1%) and better NHS detection services but you have to wonder about the Sellafield reprocessing plant, the most toxic nuclear plant in Europe, seeping pollutants around our coast for 70 years now, the nuclear submarines in the Clyde and munitions on the roads and rail, the waste travelling to Sellafield, the rotting nuclear hulks in Rosyth, as well as the power stations, only recently shut down.

The population in Scotland is also a bit older than that for England. It is also possible that because people trust the Scottish Government more than Westminster is trusted that more people in Scotland attend for screening and other services.
Anent nuclear energy and waste being a factor, it has been known for years that there are ‘clusters’ close to nuclear facilities. However, perhaps if ‘proximity’ were defined more widely, more cases might be detected. It is possible that because the ‘density’ of such facilities in Scotland per square kilometre or per capita that this is a factor.
It would be useful to see data for the Irish Sea area – Cumbria, Isle of Man, the North of Ireland as well as Dumfries and Galloway.
However, I suspect that for the unionist, the Johan Lamont thesis explains it. We are not genetically programmed to run our own affairs so we are probably not genetically programmed to resist nuclear radiation.

According to Hugh Pennington Scotland should embrace nuclear in his letter in the Tory P@J no friend of SNP as has been pointed out many times on this site.

Even with all the nuclear disasters across the world there are still idiots who proclaim it is safe Yes England use Scotland as a nuclear dump thats what happens when you let snpther country run most of your politics and government .

Historical higher alcohol consumption. Going down. Less migration in Scotland. Genetics.
Thatcher. People’s health destroyed in Scotland. Scottish revenues and resources taken to subsidise London S/E. bankers who fund the Tory party. Scotland stripped bare of facilities. Higher unemployment.
Westminster lies and appalling behaviour kept secret under the Official Secrets Act. Lockerbie, Dunblane. Iraq kept secret for 100 years.

The mapping of the cancers and type is important, as a means to determine possible cause. Sellafield waste spreads along our west coast as far as Mull, but curiously avoids the Firth of Clyde. Repulsed by it’s own store of nuclear isotopes from Faslane and Hunterston?
Then there is Chernobyl which heavily contaminated the West coast and Dumfries and Galloway April 1986 (it rain heavily all during the fallout period in D&G) Wales was similarly affected. Resulted in banned lamb sales for many years. The lambs from the effected farms (above a bench mark of becquerels per kg ) were shipped to the East coast, to shit out the isotopes in less contaminated ground, lowering the becquerel count before entering the food chain.
It must also be noted that the Westminster government felt it an unnecessary precaution to issue iodine tablets. Iodine-131, one of three main Chernobyl signatures, short half life of 8 days and lodges in the thyroid, a cause of thyroid cancer.
Cesium-134 and 137, 29/30 year half life. It is the half life transition where it can become even more pernicious as it decays to radioactive Barium and starts emitting Gamma rays. Risks of internal cancers, soft tissue, leukaemia.
Strontium-90, 30 year half life and is linked to causation of bone cancers.
The risks of another year 86 Chernobyl is minute, they are having further difficulties at the now covered site. Neutron emissions have started to increase indicating nuclear fission is underway within the 90% of Uranium fuel that flowed into the now capped basement.
A question for the pro-nuclear lobby, How many deaths are acceptable to you, before you say stop nuclear.
