Sewage dumping – Scotland’s water regulator is clean

By Professor John Robertson OBA In the Guardian today, the above and this shocking statement: The government, its water regulator and the Environment Agency could all be taken to court over their failure to tackle sewage dumping in England after a watchdog found failures to comply with the law. An investigation by the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) found Ofwat, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Environment Agency (EA) all failed to stop water companies from discharging sewage into rivers and seas in England when it was not raining heavily. The OEP was set up in 2020 to replace the role … Continue reading Sewage dumping – Scotland’s water regulator is clean

Raw sewage including floating turds found in Scottish Labour communications pipe as official stats prove 90% of England’s water is dirty and 90% of ours is clean

Chris Murray, new Labour MP for Edinburgh East and Musselburgh (left – easy next to Ian Murray (?))eager to please, finds this maybe sewage (right) on the Portobello Beach: From the National, yesterday: NEW: A Labour MP has been told to ‘fact check first’ by members of the public after he falsely claimed there was a sewage leak in his constituency. Chris Murray had posted an image of what he believed to be a sewage leak at Portobello Beach in Edinburgh. https://x.com/ScotNational/status/1852341572257640502 Keir is desperate to balance out the raw sewage discharges between England and Scotland but it’s not easy. … Continue reading Raw sewage including floating turds found in Scottish Labour communications pipe as official stats prove 90% of England’s water is dirty and 90% of ours is clean

Question Time lies don’t hold water…..Scotland does not have the same water pollution issues as England factchecked by AI

By Professor John Robertson: Not for the first time, BBC Question Time panellists tried to excuse problems in England by pointing, ill-informed, to comparable problems in Scotland. Last night, pressed on the notion of re-nationalising water, both Labour and Conservative panellists suggested things were the same in Scotland. Let’s ask Google’s fancy new AI search facility. Asked ‘Scottish Water sewage fine‘ and the wee lad (I call AI that) says confidently – ‘Scottish Water has been fined a number of times for sewage-related incidents, including‘ before going on to tell us the last time was 2020, £19 000 and the only … Continue reading Question Time lies don’t hold water…..Scotland does not have the same water pollution issues as England factchecked by AI

Every water firm in England and Wales, one Scottish caravan site and one guy in Muir of Ord under investigation over sewage spills

Thanks once more to Dottie’s Phone for alerting me to this. From the Guardian today: The water regulator is taking action against four more water companies, including Severn Trent and United Utilities, meaning every wastewater company in England and Wales is under investigation over sewage spills. Ofwat said it had served formal notices on Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Hafren Dyfrdwy, Severn Trent and United Utilities, asking them to provide evidence for its investigation into companies’ wastewater management in England and Wales. The regulator has looked at the companies’ environmental performance and data about how often they spill from storm overflows. It said this had … Continue reading Every water firm in England and Wales, one Scottish caravan site and one guy in Muir of Ord under investigation over sewage spills

Diarrhoea in the Thames again, £18 billion in debt, £150 million to shareholders just before investors withdraw a pledge to pay for a clean-up and Labour are not interested

Thanks to Dottie’s Phone for alerting me to this. In May 2024, the Guardian told us: Thames Water has sent samples of water for lab testing after dozens of people reported becoming unwell with stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea in south-east London.  Today, they have: Thames Water has been urged to show greater transparency over its finances and accused of “financial chicanery” after it emerged its board had approved a £150m dividend hours before its shareholders U-turned on providing emergency funding. The Guardian revealed last week that the board of the struggling water supplier agreed to the payout at a meeting on … Continue reading Diarrhoea in the Thames again, £18 billion in debt, £150 million to shareholders just before investors withdraw a pledge to pay for a clean-up and Labour are not interested

Cryptosporidium in the Capital, Diarrhoea in Devon, a Toilet in the Thames, a Lavvy in the Lake and Sick sheep in the Swale? Eh…drug deaths…..ferries…

By Professor John Robertson Today, in the Guardian, we see: Thames Water has sent samples of water for lab testing after dozens of people reported becoming unwell with stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea in south-east London. Earlier this month, unsafe drinking water led to more than 100 cases of a waterborne disease in Devon, with people asked to boil their water because of contamination fears. After cryptosporidium, a disease that can cause symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting, was detected in the water supply in the Brixham area of Devon 10 days ago, 17,000 households and businesses were told by South … Continue reading Cryptosporidium in the Capital, Diarrhoea in Devon, a Toilet in the Thames, a Lavvy in the Lake and Sick sheep in the Swale? No evidence of deliberate misreporting of overflow data by Scottish Water

By Professor John Robertson Typically Anglocentric or should that be Britocentric (?), the Guardian has the above headline and: Exclusive: Whistleblowers point to broader sewage scandal, with wastewater systems manipulated to divert sewage. Whistleblowers say UK water companies are knowingly failing to treat legally required amounts of sewage, and that some treatment works are manipulating wastewater systems to divert raw sewage away from the works and into rivers and seas. It is well known that water companies are dumping large volumes of raw sewage into rivers and seas from storm overflows but an investigation by the Guardian and Watershed Investigations reveals that the … Continue reading No evidence of deliberate misreporting of overflow data by Scottish Water
