Repeat interruption and misuse of statistics – Fiona Bruce’s masterclass in media bias

Professor John Robertson On June 13, 2024, BBC Question Times’s chair, Fiona Bruce, interrupted the SNP MSP Kate Forbes to such an extent, hundreds put in formal complaints to the BBC but, regardless, a week later to she did the same to the SNP leader, John Swinney. The extent of that bias had been helpfully measured by @OfOxter a month earlier when Bruce had interrupted SNP Westminster leader, Stephen Flynn, 21 times compared to only 5 times for Labour leader, Anas Sarwar and 3 times and only once for the other party leaders. The most extreme example, in recent times, … Continue reading Repeat interruption and misuse of statistics – Fiona Bruce’s masterclass in media bias

Practices of the mainstream media in Scotland – ‘grooming’ for the Union?

By stewartb Motivating much of the work of TuS is a recognition that the mainstream news and current affairs media that supposedly ‘serve’ Scotland’s polity do nothing of the sort: they do NOT serve our democracy well when judged in terms of delivering balance and objectivity. Even the UK’s (and Scotland’s) prime public service broadcaster, the BBC – the organisation which promotes itself endlessly both domestically and internationally as a beacon of journalistic quality and integrity (or whatever other gushing self-aggrandisement it favours) – falls very far short within and towards Scotland. It fails to inform on relevant context; it … Continue reading Practices of the mainstream media in Scotland – ‘grooming’ for the Union?

Anger as Herald lies about inward investment double UK average in ‘SNP’ Scotland

In the Herald today, Brian Donnelly writes the above and: A senior housing industry figure has claimed Scotland has become a “no-go zone” for investors. He warns the SNP over housing laws that include rent controls will keep housebuilding in years of stagnation and Labour over its potential capping plans. Some facts: According to EY’s annual independent analysis of inward investment, 142 FDI projects were secured last year, an increase of 12.7% on 2022 and double the rate of growth experienced across the UK. Scotland’s share of UK FDI projects increased for a fifth year in a row to 14.4%. England and Wales releasing prisoners early at nearly TWICE the rate of Scotland

So simple and effective but Scottish – The SNP Child Payment scares other UK child poverty activists and experts into deathly silence

The omission by a leading poverty charity on BBC Woman’s Hour  – it’s hard to conceive of a discussion of the ‘two-child benefit cap’ in which reference to the Scottish Child Payment could have been more apposite!  Inexplicable or what? By stewartb – a long read I listened to a lengthy piece on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour (11 July) on the ‘two-child benefit cap’. This is arguably a ‘flagship’ BBC programme with a UK-wide target audience: it is a valuable platform for advocacy groups. The item was prompted by a new Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)  report on … Continue reading So simple and effective but Scottish – The SNP Child Payment scares other UK child poverty activists and experts into deathly silence

The Cringe Cartoonist

The Herald’s Steven Camley has a long track record of cringy comments on the communities he lives among. Not for him, the wit, not the courage, to satirise the powerful who keep us down. Today he sneers at Scotland’s GPs and housing supply to reinforce that kind of ill-informed personal experience-based moaning that Reporting Scotland can always find. Never mind the facts when a cheap laugh at yer ain folk is what you love. Never mind: From the Scottish Government on 28 May 2024: 84% of people who needed to see or speak to a doctor / nurse quite urgently were … Continue reading The Cringe Cartoonist

Already a better society after 17 years of SNP rule and Scottish universities buck UK trend to attract more not fewer international students

In the Guardian today, their Education editor daft enough to to use a Glasgow Uni shot, writes: UK universities face financial turmoil as figures from the Home Office show plunging numbers of international students applying for courses starting in the next academic year. Applications for sponsored study visas have fallen by 40%, suggesting the visa restrictions applied by the previous government continue to hamper recruitment. The Home Office received 28,200 applications last month, compared with 38,900 in June 2023. But three days ago, BBC Scotland had: Net migration to Scotland more than doubled in the year between 2021 and 2022 – up to … Continue reading Already a better society after 17 years of SNP rule and Scottish universities buck UK trend to attract more not fewer international students

The Letby baby deaths and the UK Conservative / Lib Dem Government cuts beginning 5 years earlier to nurse-staffing levels far below those in NHS Scotland

By Professor John Robertson In June 2024, researchers at The Kings Fund revealed the above collapse in funding for the NHS in England, after the last Labour Government in 2009. Above, from the House of Commons Library in March 2024, revealing the 100% plus increase in the waiting lists in the same period of suppressed funding. Above from the Kings Fund in May 2024, evidence of significant increases in some NHS England staffing but, crucially, not in nurses and those who support them – a 25% increase to deal with doubled waiting lists.
