To contribute, only if you can (!) go to: Talking-up Scotland – a Politics crowdfunding project in Ayr by Professor John Robertson Professor John Robertson OBA Before the rise of the SNP, trade unions had very little presence in the media other than in being presented as hate figures whose industrial actions spoiled or risked … Continue reading Scotland’s media and the trade unions before and after the rise of the SNP

Ferries? The A9? NHS backlogs? Nope, it’s the economy stupid….and health too….but that’s essentially it

From the Scottish Government’s Public attitudes to cost of living and other topics: tracker – data tables, based on fieldwork on 3rd to 6th October 2024, with a sample of 1 067 weighted to represent the population in terms of gender, age and social grade, we can draw the following conclusions to inform political campaigning for the 2026 Scottish election. Only two areas really matter, really seem to concern a significant percentage of the population of all categories and so might influence voting patterns significantly – personal finances and the economy (78%) and within that, the cost of living (55%), … Continue reading Ferries? I could walk 140 000 miles or repaint the Sistine Chapel ceiling before Operation Branchform admits defeat

From the ever-excellent Wee Ginger Dug in the National today, 15 things that took less time to resolve than Operation Branchform: I’m guessing Ukraine and Russia do a deal before a Scottish court, the second it sees the charges against Peter Murrell and/or Nicola Sturgeon, chucks them out. All things must end. The Ukraine war will end this year and Operation Branchform, soon after. Branchform was clearly set up, on orders from the UK Government, to milk this ridiculous case as long as possible, ignoring the scornful laughter, to weaken the SNP, as it has, as soon as we saw … Continue reading I could walk 140 000 miles or repaint the Sistine Chapel ceiling before Operation Branchform admits defeat

56% for Yes with EU membership and they’d welcome us with open arms and fast – this must be the SNP strategy now

Today’s YouGov poll has 56% of people would vote for independence if it meant EU membership, while just 32% would vote No. https://ygo-assets-websites-editorial-emea.yougov.net/documents/Internal_IndyRef_240903.pdf While the No majority without that, will get the mainstream headlines, the message for the SNP and the other pro-independence parties is clear. In September 2020: Tory List MSP, Dean Lockhart, helpfully took the time to remind us of the level of support for Scotland’s return to the EU by asking Mike Russell for confirmation of his claim that a former president of the EU had said to his face that Scotland would be able to join … Continue reading 56% for Yes with EU membership and they’d welcome us with open arms and fast – this must be the SNP strategy now

Now that was all ‘maximising’ influence and benefit for Scotland’s businesses!

By stewartb Prominent on Labour in Scotland’s website right now is this: ‘What will Labour do for Scotland? – Our 6 first steps to change Scotland‘. This is Labour’s step number six! Perhaps a moments thought as to relevant context and perspective by Labour’s leadership in Scotland might have been helpful before issuing this kind of substance-free stuff. It’s possible of course that this ‘maximising’ pledge has been dreamt up to give an incoming Labour Secretary of State for Scotland (Ian Murray?) cover for a ‘pretendy’ purpose! This pledge to Scotland on ‘maximising influence’ on trade ironically is from the same … Continue reading Now that was all ‘maximising’ influence and benefit for Scotland’s businesses!
