Reform UK’s manifesto ‘the sums do not add up’ and ‘would require substantial cuts to the quantity or quality of public services’ in Scotland

The Talking-up Scotland fund raiser primarily, finishing in 9 days, to enable the recruitment of some research assistance, in order to take pressure off me [74 in June and tiring] and hopefully to further improve the blog, has made a good start. To contribute, only if you can (!) go to: Talking-up Scotland – a Politics crowdfunding project in Ayr by Professor John Robertson Professor John Robertson OBA In June 2024, the IFS had a look at the Reform UK manifesto. Even this rightist think tank was less than impressed and concluded: Even with the extremely optimistic assumptions about how much economic … Continue reading Reform UK’s manifesto ‘the sums do not add up’ and ‘would require substantial cuts to the quantity or quality of public services’ in Scotland

Ayrshire MP’s team helps local people nearly TEN THOUSAND times in only four and a half years

Allan Dorans was MP for Ayr Carrick and Cumnock until 30th May 2024 and will be standing for re-election on July 4th Since my election in December 2019, with my team, I have responded to requests for help and advice nearly 10 000 times. We have helped, many times with constituents in real difficulty, struggling to survive, by making sure they get the benefits they are entitled to, better housing or disability support. Many write to demand fairer treatment for animals, an end to the abuse of human rights in numerous countries where the UK has influence, or improvements in … Continue reading Ayrshire MP’s team helps local people nearly TEN THOUSAND times in only four and a half years

How the Scottish Labour Lords cannot bear to hear of the SNP government’s actions to reduce child poverty in Scotland

By stewartb The House of Commons Library and the House of Lords Library amongst other things publish ‘briefings’ in advance of debates. The purpose is to provide MPs and peers respectively – particularly backbench members of both houses – with information and insight on upcoming topics. After all, backbenchers may not have sufficient tacit knowledge on all subjects to make judgements on the content of debates, nor have sufficient research resource to make good their knowledge limitations. The Libraries’ briefings are designed to ensure backbenchers are better informed. The House of Lords Library (HoLL) published this briefing on 23 April … Continue reading How the Scottish Labour Lords cannot bear to hear of the SNP government’s actions to reduce child poverty in Scotland

Is the Labour-supporting GMB the dirtiest and most dangerous trade union in Scotland?

Only last week, the GMB union leader was exposed as a bully and misogynist, after having campaigned to become leader, promising to eradicate the bullying and misogyny at the heart of the union. Today, in the Herald: The GMB has warned MSPs against the planned hike in minimum unit pricing (MUP) saying it will hurt lowest earning Scots hardest. The trade union, representing many drink industry workers, said ministers had “been too quick to accept the untested assurances of advisors and lobby groups.” So that’s a culture of bullying and misogyny plus promoting alcohol consumption? There’s a dangerous cocktail. Might we call it … Continue reading Is the Labour-supporting GMB the dirtiest and most dangerous trade union in Scotland?

GMB – Scottish Labour’s favourite union is institutionally sexist

By NMRN “Staff at one of Britain’s biggest trade unions, the GMB, have voted to strike over claims the organisation has failed to act on a report which branded it “institutionally sexist”. “Karon Monaghan KC was called in to investigate sexual harassment in the GMB in 2020”. “Employees in the North East say promised reforms have not materialised”. “The Monaghan investigation began after the abrupt resignation of the then-General Secretary Tim Roache”. “She concluded that “bullying, misogyny, cronyism, and sexual harassment were endemic” in the union. Her report found there was a “bully-boy atmosphere”, describing the union as a “hostile environment” … Continue reading GMB – Scottish Labour’s favourite union is institutionally sexist

Climate change – ‘Why don’t they do it as well as the Scots?’

there is a target that can’t be met, so it is a shame we have to give that message to the Scottish Government but what is behind it is behind it is a lack of progress all round. The above comments follow on from the opening headline claim by BBC Scotland that: Climate experts say a target for a 75% emissions cut by 2030 is out of reach and make much of its ‘legally-binding’ nature. Chris Stark above is the Chief Executive of the CCC, just about to leave them, so must be well-informed of progress or otherwise made by … Continue reading Climate change – ‘Why don’t they do it as well as the Scots?’

Already worse, how much more so can England’s pupil-teacher ratio get?

Today in the Observer: Schools across England are warning they will soon be unsafe because they are having to cut teachers and support staff to save money, with record numbers now in deficit. With escalating behavioural problems, soaring numbers of children with special educational needs, and increased pupil numbers, schools say staff are already stretched to the limit. Yet heads across the country say they now have no choice but to plan redundancies or not replace leaving staff in order to balance their books. One in eight local authority maintained schools were in deficit in 2022-23, the highest number on … Continue reading Already worse, how much more so can England’s pupil-teacher ratio get?

Can anyone recall any interrogation of witnesses or any media assessment around the ACTUAL content of key Cabinet papers?

stewartb ‘Could the Covid inquiry reshape the UK?’ – this is the headline above a piece by James Cook on the BBC News website today. Mr Cook is of course BBC Scotland’s political editor whose team of journalists has been working hard to amplify the alleged ‘significance’ of WhatsApp messaging more than anything else in news reports on the Covid Inquiry’s Edinburgh sessions. Having feasted on the Inquiry’s references to WhatsApps, Mr Cook seems to have belatedly become aware of the journalistic relevance of ‘perspective’. He writes today: ‘ Not so many years ago many of the conversations now under … Continue reading Can anyone recall any interrogation of witnesses or any media assessment around the ACTUAL content of key Cabinet papers?
