FACTCHECK – The MV Glenn Sannox HAS a smaller carbon footprint than the old ferry taking 41% more cars for only 34% more emissions* on the second greenest form of transport in the world

PA MEDIA By Johann Von Robberstein, TuS International Transport Correspondent, O-Grade Mathematics, Grangemouth High School, 1967. Many thanks to JB for alerting me to this. Only yesterday, BBC Scotland were so delighted to tell us: The carbon footprint of a long-delayed new “green” ferry will be far larger than the 31-year-old diesel ship that usually serves the route between the Scottish mainland and the island of Arran. An emissions analysis by CalMac has calculated MV Glen Sannox will emit 10,391 equivalent tonnes of CO2 a year compared with 7,732 for MV Caledonian Isles. *Even if we accept the above figures, … Continue reading FACTCHECK – The MV Glenn Sannox HAS a smaller carbon footprint than the old ferry taking 41% more cars for only 34% more emissions* on the second greenest form of transport in the world

Scotland’s electricity transfers to England worth more than £3 BILLION

From Energy Statistics for Scotland – Q3 2024, published today: Scotland is a net exporter of electricity. In 2023, the equivalent of 33.8% of electricity generated in Scotland was exported: 13.9 TWh to England and Wales, and 2.0 TWh to Northern Ireland. Scotland has seen a steady rise in the proportion of electricity generated from low-carbon sources from 49.4% in 2004 to 89.6% in 2023.1 According to EDF, 1 KWh is currently worth around 24p2. One TWh is 1 000 000 000 KWh So 1 TWh is worth around 1 000 000 000 times 24p or £240m. 13.9 TWh is … Continue reading Scotland’s electricity transfers to England worth more than £3 BILLION

After 14 years of Tory rule in England and 17 of SNP rule in Scotland, 22 times as many properties at risk of flooding….in England, of course

By Professor John Robertson OBA In the Independent and others, today, a warning that 6.3 million homes and businesses in England are at serious risk of flooding. According to Sepa, the figure in Scotland is 284 000: https://www.sepa.org.uk/environment/water/flooding/flood-risk-management-plans/#:~:text=Flood%20risk%20management%20plans%20are,as%20at%20risk%20of%20flooding. Crudely, 22.2 times as many, but with 10 times the population, all things being equal, you might expect there to be around 2.8 million homes and businesses at risk of flooding in England but it’s 6.3, on the way to three times as many. Why might this be? As far back as 2006, researchers at the English College of Estates Management, whose patron was … Continue reading After 14 years of Tory rule in England and 17 of SNP rule in Scotland, 22 times as many properties at risk of flooding….in England, of course

Why are so few, if any, homes flooding in Scotland after Storm Darragh’s massive rainfall?

Professor John Robertson OBA I know, Storm Darragh’s winds hit Wales and South-West England hardest but Scotland had a similar massive downpour of between 30 and 45mm in different parts. Reports of flooded homes and infrastructure are everywhere in the media except in Scotland. Why might that be? Maybe I’m tempting fate, but we’ve been here before, in 2016, as major flooding of homes in England was desperately linked by ‘our’ media to a few cases in Scotland and supposed SNP failures. Why are homes in Scotland not flooding despite massive rainfall? As far back as 2006, researchers at the English College … Continue reading Why are so few, if any, homes flooding in Scotland after Storm Darragh’s massive rainfall?

Labour Government leaves Wales ‘at mercy’ of storm and it seems not to care that much

From the Guardian today: Communities ‘left at mercy’ of Storm Bert owing to poor readiness Welsh leaders say warnings and defences were inadequate – but government says it cannot protect ‘every single home and business’ Imagine the Scottish Government said ‘it cannot protect ‘every single home and business?’ Based on the evidence, the Scottish Government has been able to protect almost every home and business after 17 years. Here’s the evidence, apologies to regulars, from even two years ago: Despite 30 flood warnings and 7 severe flood warning on November 19 2022, Scotland’s media had no images or reports of … Continue reading Labour Government leaves Wales ‘at mercy’ of storm and it seems not to care that much

‘There are no mandates to ensure GB Energy and foreign energy firms source from UK suppliers’

By Anonymous UK government Scotland tweet on 15 October 2024: “Yesterday the UK Government secured £63 billion of investment to provide almost 38,000 jobs. Scotland will benefit from the UK Government’s plans to drive growth. Some quickfire qs to Scottish Secretary @IanMurrayMP on why Scotland is the place to invest”. (Note how this tweet does not specify that the “38,000 jobs” will be in Scotland in fact they only mention Scotland as supposdley benefitting via the “UK government’s plans to drive growth” but then how will Scotland benefit from that , as surely it is more their whole UK , as in mainly one part of it- not Scotland- that will derive more benefits, to include majority of jobs and “growth“, which will also then include … Continue reading ‘There are no mandates to ensure GB Energy and foreign energy firms source from UK suppliers’

11 year-old explains that England has more in common – 4 times as many homes at risk of flooding – with disaster-prone Florida than stormy Scotland!

Watching BBC 24 last night, up popped a story suggesting that Scotland had similar worries to Florida. I had to the check the date wasn’t 1 April. Then Liz Lloyd (background booing) popped up to talk vaguely about the notion. I had to the check the date wasn’t 1 April. When did she become a spokesperson for the Scot Gov? You won’t be surprised to hear that I was more exercised by those numbers suggesting Scotland clearly has more to worry about storms and floods than rUK and is thus spending more on them. I’ll come back to that below. … Continue reading 11 year-old explains that England has more in common – 4 times as many homes at risk of flooding – with disaster-prone Florida than stormy Scotland!

BBC Scotland go to Cornwall to suggest an energy powerhouse like Scotland is subject to global events like every other country

As the energy companies announce a 10% hike, BBC Scotland went to visit locals who will struggle, then tried to explain it all way as due to ‘global events’ that cannot be avoided, using in a surreal manner, a woman from Cornwall Insight for evidence. You can be sure that Norwegian news broadcasters are not telling their viewers that Norway is helpless in the face of global events. Why? Because they have the oil, gas and wind power to be able to protect their population from exploitation. Is Norway unique? Well, I know a country with the same population (c5 … Continue reading BBC Scotland go to Cornwall to suggest an energy powerhouse like Scotland is subject to global events like every other country

The Cruachan scheme demonstrated the feasibility of reversible pumped-storage systems nearly 60 years ago

By Alasdair Macdonald It is a long time since the Cruachan scheme was built which demonstrated the feasibility of such projects at a time when UK Government policy was about oil, gas and nuclear, with some continuing coal use. Such schemes were for ‘remote areas’, like Scotland. The main drawback is higher start up costs – the Cruachan scheme entails hollowing out a mountain. This kind of expenditure is often too much for governments which usually think only in terms of 4/5 year election cycles and, for many investors, this kind of time frame is too long to make a … Continue reading The Cruachan scheme demonstrated the feasibility of reversible pumped-storage systems nearly 60 years ago

The Sustainable Saudi Arabia – renewable electricity generation surges by 27.9% in one year as consumption falls by 18% under SNP
