Fact Check – Lib Dems reveal nearly 3 TIMES as many wait more than 12 hours in English A&Es than in Scotland
In 2023, 58 782 people waited for more than 12 hours in Scotland’s Emergency Departments. All things being equal, with 10 times the population, NHS England should then have had around 588 000 waiting for more than 12 hours. However, according to ‘analysis of the official data by the (UK) Liberal Democrats‘, reported in the Guardian today, the figure was 1 540 945, pro rata, nearly 3 times as many. Yesterday, we heard that aging Australian ferries were being brought back into service to replace cheap Chinese-built ferries blowing up. Today, we hear: KiwiRail told ministers its ill-fated ferry project required “urgent attention”, just days before it got axed. The Interislander operator today released its briefing to the incoming ministers, which had been prepared at the end of November. Shortly after the report was written, the project to buy two new ferries and upgrade two ports was axed when the government refused to spend an extra $1.5 billion. Concerns over the reliability of the new Generation 2 Emerald-class ferry fleet have been mounting since they first entered service in October 2021. Scottish Government funding enables Scottish company to test ground-breaking new giant gravity battery
From the Independent today: An abandoned mine in Finland is set to be transformed into a giant battery to store renewable energy during periods of excess production. The Pyhäsalmi Mine, roughly 450 kilometres north of Helsinki, is Europe’s deepest zinc and copper mine and holds the potential to store up to 2 MW of energy within its 1,400-metre-deep shafts. The disused mine will be fitted with a gravity battery, which uses excess energy from renewable sources like solar and wind in order to lift a heavy weight.
