“Journalists blocked from attending the event” (shurely not the same Journalists that currently are doing their very best for Labour to win in Scotland in the next GE

by NMRN As part of Open Democracy’s ‘Dark Money investigations‘ they reported last week on 15th February “that Labour barred press from secretive lobbying event at the Scottish party conference” “The Party has refused to provide a list of sponsors and attendees at Glasgow forum for ‘high-level’ discussions” “Scottish Labour had blocked journalists from attending a lobbying event for business which is running alongside its party conference in Glasgow this week” “A number of frontbench figures appeared at the Scottish Labour Business Forum” which “allowed C-suite business leaders an opportunity for high level discussion with senior UK and Scottish Labour politicians”. … Continue reading “Journalists blocked from attending the event” (shurely not the same Journalists that currently are doing their very best for Labour to win in Scotland in the next GE

NHS new building on pause – a trade union convenor is not an ‘independent expert’

Headlining early today for the Labour Party on Reporting Scotland, we see a Fife Labour councillor condemn one wee GP surgery building, specially chosen for their campaign. On the BBC Scotland website and, no doubt, on longer broadcasts, we read: Independent experts warned it was unlikely NHS Scotland would “survive” without extra funding this year. Basic journalism standards require that both the independent experts and the word ‘survive’ will re-appear in the full text below. Neither do. The only comments are from Donald Campbell, chairman of the Kincardine community council and from Dr Iain Kennedy, chair of BMA Scotland. The word … Continue reading NHS new building on pause – a trade union convenor is not an ‘independent expert’

You’re really gonna need a new ferry correspondent

Taking over on the fake ferry fiasco front, replacing the myopic, ‘I see no ships beyond Scotland’, Martin Williams, we have Alan Simpson, ‘Head of Print’, with one of the daftest reports so far. Before I get to that, ‘Head of Print?’ He boldly chooses the fonts, sizes, line spacing, that sort of thing? He manages the print room? Does he usually write things? Anyhoo, he opens bizarrely, with: So, the USA GDP is $27 360 000 000 (27 trillion). The Glen Sannox cost is £360 million. I know, it was a joke, but would a comparison with London’s Crossrail, … Continue reading You’re really gonna need a new ferry correspondent

Labour Civil War as ‘Scottish’ Labour vote for SNP motion on Gaza ceasefire

Above, in November 2023, a pretty clear indication of how the two Scottish Labour MPs, Murray and Shanks, will vote on an SNP motion in the House of Commons next week. Below, today, this bizarre BBC Scotland report: Were Murray and Shanks there? Did they support this motion, essentially the same as the SNP motion in the House of Commons next week? Murray and Shanks? You know, these two: In the BBC Scotland report, only this one mention of these two: The SNP is urging Mr Sarwar to whip Michael Shanks and Ian Murray to side with them in a … Continue reading Labour Civil War as ‘Scottish’ Labour vote for SNP motion on Gaza ceasefire

Rabidly anti-Scotland journalism in coverage of the latest report on anti-Semitism.

By stewartb I have no wish to underplay the awful impacts of discrimination, abuse and acts of violence against individuals and their communities that are motivated by religious or ethnic prejudice or hate. Nor do I wish to appear complacent. However, those seeking to address serious issues involved in sustaining community safety and respectful co-existence are IMHO not well served by ‘misrepresentation’ of statistics or worse. I offer the example of the Scottish Daily Express (15 February) which has been exhibiting its all too familiar rabidly anti-Scotland journalism in coverage of the Community Security Trust’s (CST) latest report on anti-semitism. Express … Continue reading Rabidly anti-Scotland journalism in coverage of the latest report on anti-Semitism.

So it’s political blackmail now is it from Sarwar?

By NMRN “Scottish Labour would use the money raised from closing the non-dom tax loophole in the UK to slash NHS waiting lists in Scotland, Anas Sarwar will pledge“ Does that mean that this ‘pledge’ from Sarwar would ONLY happen if Scotland voted Labour in Scotland at the next Holyrood elections and they were elected as the next Scottish government…..as the above quote stated “Scottish Labour would use the money”…….and not…..the Scottish government (meaning existing one) could have extra money for say the NHS for example….. I think we all know that if there is a Labour government at WM and the SNP are … Continue reading So it’s political blackmail now is it from Sarwar?

Despite a failing ferry service, Canadian media support local shipyards over cheap, unsafe, unreliable, outdated, foreign vessels

From the Times Colonist in British Columbia, yesterday: Editorial: B.C. Ferries’ vessels should be built in B.C. B.C. Ferries has decided to buy four more Island class boats to serve the Nanaimo-Gabriola Island and Campbell River-Quadra Island routes. Here’s the problem. All four boats will be built at a Romanian shipyard. And this makes no sense. So how can such a small economy beat out local yards here at home? No doubt part of the reason is wage rates. Romania is a poor country, and its workers earn less than ours. https://www.timescolonist.com/opinion/editorial-bc-ferries-vessels-should-be-built-in-bc-8316651 Add to the above factor – low wages … Continue reading Despite a failing ferry service, Canadian media support local shipyards over cheap, unsafe, unreliable, outdated, foreign vessels

Sarwar’s non dom tax might increase medical appointments by less than 1%!

Once more, Labour have trouble with their sums. From STV today: Scottish Labour would use the money raised from closing the non-dom tax loophole in the UK to slash NHS waiting lists in Scotland, Anas Sarwar will pledge. The Scottish Labour leader will tell the party’s conference in Glasgow that the policy could fund 160,000 new NHS appointments a year. Scottish Labour’s three-day conference begins on Friday at the Scottish Event Campus and will end on Sunday. Keir Starmer said in October that £1.5bn raised by scrapping the loophole would go to funding more NHS appointments. Scottish Labour said that … Continue reading Sarwar’s non dom tax might increase medical appointments by less than 1%!

Deadly measles travelling into Scotland despite 96% vaccination rate

From Public Health Scotland, yesterday: Public Health Scotland is aware of five cases of laboratory confirmed measles in Scotland since October 2023, all of which have been linked to travel. The latest two cases were confirmed today, 16 February 2024. PHS is encouraging the public to take up the offer of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Having two doses of the MMR vaccine is the best way to be fully protected against measles.
