BBC Lincolnshire today has:
British Steel ‘needs nationalising by the summer’ – British Steel needs to be brought into public ownership by the summer if a deal between its Chinese owner and the government fails, an MP has said. Labour MP Nic Dakin told the BBC that was “the best outcome” for the business to move forward and get investment while talks with firm Jingye are ongoing, as the tenure remains unresolved a year on.
The government took control of the Scunthorpe plant, which employs 2,700 staff – about three-quarters of the company’s workforce – on 12 April 2025 to prevent the last two remaining blast furnaces from closing. Industry minister Chris McDonald said he remained committed to resolving a deal because British Steel “is of vital importance to the country”.
Only in the 15th paragraph do we see:
According to the National Audit Office, British Steel is costing the government about £1.3m a day.
There is no estimate of the cost of meeting the headline demand.
In 2025, Sky News put the cost of full nationalisation of ‘British Steel’ at £4-5 billion! https://uk.news.yahoo.com/british-steel-nationalise-cost-scunthorpe-170452205.html
Scotland does not have any integrated primary steelmaking (iron + steel from scratch) left. The last large-scale integrated works, Ravenscraig in Motherwell, closed in 1992. Nevertheless, as this money would have to come from a reserved not devolved budget, Scots will have to pay their share? £400 million, not directly but given there is only one pot, Scotland will pay its share some way or other, in increased taxes, interest payments or in cuts tom the block grant.

Aww, warm cosy feeling Scotland’s very able and very unwilling (tough!) to help England’s industry and economy during such trying times. I am sure they will take back their sewagey water from private companies, and their overpriced rail, at Scotland’s expense as well…aww….GRRRRRRR!
