From GB News today:
Vital safety lessons from past meningococcal disease are not being acted on – with researchers saying coroners have raised the same concerns for more than a decade.
Twenty confirmed cases and two deaths linked to meningococcal infection have been reported in Kent this month, in what health officials say is a fast-moving cluster affecting young people.
Vaccination failures were raised repeatedly in earlier inquests.
As with most vaccination programmes, the rate in England is well below the WHO recommended 95% target and significantly worse than that in Scotland.
Type England Scotland
- Meningitis B 91% 94%
- PCV 93% 96%
- Hib/6-in-1 91% 94%
- MenB Booster 87% 92%
- PCV Booster 88% 93%
- Hib booster 88% 93%
Remember, these apparently small percentage differences refer to millions of people.
At 5 years, broader boosters (including Hib-related) are also typically higher in Scotland (often 89–95% range) compared to England (lower 80s–90s for some). Both nations show inequalities: lower uptake in more deprived areas and (in England) particularly in London.
gov.ukScotland has maintained stronger coverage for these infant vaccines in recent years, partly linked to higher overall childhood immunisation performance. England has seen gradual post-COVID recovery in some metrics but with more pronounced dips.
The case for border checks is not because there are fewer MenB cases in Scotland but because there are as many, per capita
