Scotland’s crime clear-up rates improve to levels far above those in England & Wales

From Safer Communities and Justice Statistics Monthly Data Report: March 2026 published today:

Increase in crime clear up rate. The clear up rate for all recorded crimes was 56.0% in 2024-25, up from 54.1% in 2023-24. Crimes against society (93.8%), non-sexual crimes of violence (68.4%) and sexual crimes (56.9%) continued to have higher clear up rates in 2024-25 than crimes of dishonesty (35.1%) and damage and reckless behaviour (31.0%). https://www.gov.scot/publications/safer-communities-and-justice-statistics-monthly-data-report-march-2026/pages/statistics-on-crime-in-general/

Comparisons can be problematic but, if correct, this AI generated answer to the question What is the crime clear up rate in England? is shocking

Overall charge/summons rate: Approximately 7.3% of all recorded offences resulted in a charge or summons. https://www.statista.com/statistics/1402586/crimes-solved-england-and-wales/?srsltid=AfmBOorCIpXyJ1KrgIyU4Fwf3mxSOV2clHx4k1bEALOg8uGrwKeat0r5

Sexual offences (including rape): Typically much lower (often 4–7% initially, with some later increases as investigations conclude).

Theft (including shoplifting): Improving but still low overall; shoplifting has a higher rate (~18.5%) due to in-store evidence.

Homicide: Much higher (~60%+ charged in recent data). https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/bulletins/crimeinenglandandwales/yearendingmarch2025

The contrasts are stark so maybe require further analysis but were they the other way round would be gleefully used by the MSM in Scotland.
