As the QEUH witch-hunt continues, two experts say 100% mould-free large hospitals ‘not realistic’ only months after two die and four almost die in Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred hospital

In the Herald yesterday:

Mould growth has been found in a cancer ward at a flagship hospital which was partially closed due to mould and dirty water ingress, the Health Secretary has confirmed. Neil Gray said he was made aware on Thursday morning that mould growth was found in one of the rooms on the bone marrow transplant ward at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow.

Is it possible for any large hospital to be 100% free of any mould growth, at all, in at least one of its hundreds of wards?

Experts and industry sources consistently state that no such thing as a completely “mould-free” facility exists in practice, especially not in a massive hospital with hundreds of wards. One source from healthcare facility management notes: “In a large, complex facility, having a mould-free facility isn’t realistic short of a heroic team effort to avoid mould formation.” 1 Another expert emphasizes there are “no guarantees to yield a zero mould growth in a health care facility.”2

Examples:

In Australia, in 2025, there were reports of 2 mould-related deaths and 4 near-deaths in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA) in Sydney:

The New South Wales health minister has denied “covering up” a deadly fungal outbreak at one of Australia’s largest hospitals, saying it was not publicised to avoid “unnecessarily scaring people”. The cluster of infections caused by aspergillus, a common mould, killed two patients and left four others unwell in the Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) hospital’s transplant unit in late 2025.3

  1. The greatest ”mould” concern in Scottish hospitals is the disgraceful , never- ending spreading of needless fears about safety from Ambulance Chasing Labour politicians .
