From the Safer Communities and Justice Statistics Monthly Data Report: February 2026, published today:
Property and violent crime has fallen by 37% since 2008-09. Results from the Scottish Crime and Justice Survey (SCJS) show that one-in-five (19.9%) adults were estimated to have experienced at least one crime in 2023-24. This included property crime (10.3% of adults), violent crime (2.9%) and for the first time fraud and computer misuse (9.5%). The latest findings show that the overall level of property and violent crime combined and the likelihood of being a victim of these crimes has increased since 2021-22. However, no change is detected with the pre-pandemic year of 2019-20, and both measures are down since 2008-09.
Important:
The Safer Communities and Justice Statistics Monthly Data Report: February 2026 (published by the Scottish Government on 26 February 2026) is a summary compilation of key statistics across justice and safer communities topics. It draws from a range of official statistics sources, not just one type. It is not solely based on police reports nor on a single survey. Instead, it aggregates and updates the most recently available data from multiple official channels, including:
- Police-recorded crime statistics (from Police Scotland), which cover incidents reported to and recorded by the police (e.g., numbers of crimes recorded, trends in violent crime, hate crime, etc.).
- The Scottish Crime and Justice Survey (SCJS), a separate victimisation survey that estimates the actual prevalence of crime (including unreported incidents) based on responses from the public, not police records.
- Other administrative data sources, such as court proceedings (from COPFS/Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service), prison population statistics (from Scottish Prison Service), justice social work, reconviction rates, and potentially fire or other related areas.
