How under Scottish Labour, hospitals were ‘death traps’ of hospital acquired infections yet they have the nerve to suggest a ‘crisis’ today

Michael Marra of ‘Scottish’ Labour had a rant on BBC Scotland’s Debate Night, tow days ago, of such hysterical dishonesty and fear for the near extinction event they face in May. Here, just one more example of how useless they have been and would be.

The prevalence of HAI was 4.9%, 2.5%, 6.1% and 1.2% in acute, non-acute, paediatric and independent hospitals respectively [in Scotland in 2006]. https://www.journalofhospitalinfection.com/article/S0195-6701(12)00277-0/abstract

The most recent comprehensive data on hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) in Scotland comes from a 2021 study led by Glasgow Caledonian University, commissioned by the Scottish Government. This study, published in the Journal of Hospital Infection, found that approximately 1% of hospital patients in Scotland develop HAIs annually, equating to about 7,500 patients each year. This incidence rate is notably lower than previous UK estimates (7.8%) and recent European figures (3%). https://www.scotpho.org.uk/health-conditions/infections/data/healthcare-associated-infections/

So, hospital acquired infections under the SNP are between a fifth and a half of the level in 2006, under Labour, an eighth of the level in England and a third of the level in Europe.

Why, so good?

In Scotland, the decision was taken in 2008, against the background of major problems in British hospitals with infections resistant to treatment. The Scottish ministry of health [Health Secretary, Nicola Sturgeon] banned any further contracting-out of these services, so that when existing contracts expire all work returns and remains in-house. It also financed the employment of 600 extra cleaners to raise standards of cleanliness.

New research shows that NHS hospitals that employ private cleaners are associated with a higher incidence of MRSA, a ‘superbug’ that causes life-threatening infection and has previously been linked with a lack of cleanliness…on average, the incidence of MRSA infection between 2005 and 2009 was 2.28 in every 100,000 bed days in trusts that outsourced their cleaning, compared with 1.46 bed days in trusts that used in-house cleaners –.a difference of almost 50 per cent.

The research was conducted by the University of Oxford, with the London School of Economics and Political Science, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

  1. Michael Marra of ‘Scottish’ Labour had a rant on BBC Scotland’s Debate Night

    That he did.

However both the studio audience and also the (few) viewers watching from home were supposed to ignore or forget that there is an election coming up in May , indeed it is in the very parliament that Michael Marra currently sits in as a member of one of the opposition parties, namely the Labour party.

    Politicking really.

Had the host of this programme adopted the same strategy as the similar programme at BBC HQ, as in BBC QT, then he Stephen Jardine, like Fiona Bruce, would have had handy some facts to counter Michael Marra’s #ScottishNHSBad rant, in that the host, Jardine , could have highlighted how #BAD Labour were in Wales with the Welsh NHS.

(Though Fiona Bruce never uses her handy notes to try to defend the SNP, indeed the opposite is often the case).

Alas that tactic for Jardine , as a remit, is not ever to be an action that BBC Scotland will ever want to adopt, for fear that it could then potentially give a political advantage to the SNP while exposing Labour’s duplicity and hypocrisy.

Surely by now Stephen Jardine must know that the NHS , as a subject, will always come up on this debate programme , so it would be refreshing (and a miracle) if just occasionally he, as host, could provide some actual data to compare and contrast Scotland with others nations within the UK , thus either substantiating the accusations being made against the Scottish NHS or refuting them.

The fact that he, Jardine, does not do this tends to make you think it is then far more likely that he knows that many of the opposition parties accusations upon the Scottish NHS are indeed not based upon actual facts and truth but instead are fabricated , as in trumped up claims (attacks) , all to try to tarnish the SNP, as the Scottish government, in the eyes of the Scottish electorate.

Marra playing politics, that’s all they , Labour, ever do.

Politicising public services in Scotland against the SNP while ignoring their own bad and failing record elsewhere on public services as governments in other Nations within the UK.

TBF I guess they can hardly use their own record elsewhere as governments as examples of success can they.

Like say Labour in Wales as the Welsh government and now also Labour as the new UK government.

    “Michael Marra rants”………

He may as well ‘howl at the moon’ for all the good it will now do Labour in Scotland……..if , that is, the polls are to be believed (I do so hope they are).

  2. There is a rumour that Sarah Pochin, Reform UK MP, is about to defect yet again from Reform UK to Restore Britain

She was formerly a Tory who then defected to Reform UK.

All of these political musical chairs from Tory-to Reform UK- now to Restore Britain (as some Reform UK Councillors have also defected now to Restore Britain) proves that they, as individuals, have no real conviction , belief or loyalty to the parties that they are defecting from and to.

According to Rupert Lowe his new ‘party’ , Restore Britain, now has 80,000 members (that’s scary if true) , so if indeed true, does this then not prove to voters that all of these musical chair career politicians are merely jumping ship onto what they, as careerists, assume is their best chance to be elected for whatever party they see as (supposedly) rising as a party, or them eventually winning in the future the main prize that they all covet , as in the UK GE.

These constant defections is something to watch but it is also hilarious that all of their votes , on the right, will be split….we also have Ben Habib’s new party Advance UK…..where the H will it all end and also when (soon I hope as all bubbles eventually burst).
