From Delayed discharges in NHS Scotland monthly Figures for December 2025 published today:

Timely discharge from hospital is an important indicator of quality. It is a marker that care is person-centred, effective, integrated and harm-free.

A delayed discharge occurs when a hospital patient who is clinically ready for discharge from inpatient hospital care continues to occupy a hospital bed beyond the date they are ready for discharge.

At the December 2025 census, there were 1,867 people delayed. Compared to the previous three census points, this is less than the number of people in November 2025 (2,009), October 2025 (1,962) and September 2025 (1,953). A similar trend was observed in December 2024.

That’s a 7.86% fall in one year in a two year trend.

How has this been possible?

Scotland’s public sector model based on integration and cooperation among its component parts (e.g., post-2004 abolition of the internal market, unified NHS boards, organizational stability, and no further privatization of clinical services).

England’s increasingly neoliberal public sector model based on competition between providers, patient choice, and opportunities for private sector involvement in NHS funding.
