Four years ago, on BBC Scotland, I heard an island spokesperson suggest that CalMac ferries was the worst service in the world and that they should visit other countries to learn from them.

Getting over my surprise that the folk of a wee Scottish island had a Somerset accent, I thought, you’re on and since then I have globally scoured the details of comparable services.

By comparable, I mean like Glasgow and the archipelago of islands around it, Seattle in the USA, Vancouver in Canada, Athens in Greece, Cook Straits in New Zealand, The Isle of Wight in England and the Channel Islands.

Notably all of them sailing in less stormy weather and warmer more southerly seas. Yes, British Columbia in Canada too!

What did I find?

Enormous prices often up to FOUR times the CalMac prices, generously subsidised, in all of them.

In many of them far worse reliability or no figures published. CalMac must publish everything and averages 94.5%.

90% plus satisfaction based on real travellers rather than self-selected spokespersons.

Greater safety in Scotland with no passenger, fisherman, or crew deaths or running aground unlike some of those listed.
