Scotland has world’s greatest wind capacity per head of population in the World but uses it to benefit England

The above table is not clearly linked to its source. I’ve asked and will update when I get it.

As you are aware, the above is doing nothing for our energy bills, the highest in the UK and in Europe so what’s happening to the electricity it’s producing?

Here’s the story:

The UK Energy Minister, above, appeared to claim credit for the approval of the massive 300 plus turbine, 4.1GW, windfarm off the Scottish coast near Fife and East Lothian:

Even the Scotsman knew who had actually approved it:

One of world’s biggest wind farms with 307 turbines approved near Edinburgh by SNP ministers

though they are hoping it will kill lots of seabirds.

Milliband and his boy from Scotland, below, clearly think this new project will help with their unimpressive achievement:

50%? Is that all?

How is the SNP doing?

What’s happening to the surplus there?

In 2024, Scotland exported a net total of 19.7 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity to the rest of the UK, with the majority going to England. This equates to approximately 1.64 TWh per month. These figures come from Scottish Government statistics, which note that Scotland exported 21.0 TWh and imported 1.3 TWh in 2024, resulting in the net export value. The indicative wholesale value of these net exports was around £1.5 billion.

What is missing from this picture but is highlighted by the last paragraph?

At no point has the Scottish Government imposed any conditions on the wild west sale of Scottish waters to external companies, even if openly owned by other countries. One to the north of me, the applicant suggested in their proposal for the £2 billion project, they would consider using a local port. CONSIDER!

Other countries demand that at least 40% of the total cost is spent on indigenous companies so the “wealth” these farms create goes to their country as well as the offshore accounts of those financing the builds. By HMRC figures, if a £10 billion project gives a minimum £4 billion spend in Scotland, the tax rate from that is 30% giving Scotland £1.66 more in tax revenue. In addition, the increase in demand and disposal income generates around 2.4 times of growth in the local economy which feeds back to the central pot.

In addition, I would ensure all such companies have a Scottish office so that all “Scottish Fiscal ” responsibilities are paid rather than shell companies evading taxation. A export tariff on energy to help fund Scottish initiatives like eradicating fuel poverty should be imposed as offshore wind is 1/3rd of the cost of gas produced electricity yet we are made to pay for it by that measure. If only Swinney actually looked at zonal pricing rather than dismissed it.

As we run up the election, we actually need to not only highlight the issues and false reporting but give a vision, not meally words, about what an Independent Scottish government could and should do.
