Labour Mayor welcomes murder rate falling but to still nearly 40% higher than that in Scotland

In the Guardian today:

London’s murder rate has dropped to its lowest in more than a decade with police in the capital and the mayor saying it is now one of the safest cities in the western world. The figures come as those on the radical right criticise the city for having a crime problem, hoping to gain politically from such claims being believed. In 2025, the Metropolitan police recorded 97 homicides in London, down from 153 in 2019, and down from 109 in 2024. The fall in the number of homicides comes despite a rise in London’s population, to 9.1 million compared with 8.1 million in 2010. Thus the chance of being a victim of homicide has fallen and according to Met figures there were, in 2025, 1.1 killings for every 100,000 residents of London, compared with 3.2 for Berlin, 2.9 in Brussels and 1.6 in Paris.

To be fair, it’s really good news and impressive in being lower than say Berlin or Paris.

London is so big at 9.1m it makes no sense to compare to another city but you could with Scotland, still thought of as violent in London, at 5.5m. What’s the rate there?

It’s 0.81 per million so the London rate at 1.1 is 37.5% higher.

    1. Interesting. I regard the SNP leadership as “ill-advised” when it comes to foreign affairs and defence. Most likely advised by MoD hawks. Hence the apparent support for acts of war against the biggest nuclear force on the planet. Unwise. I wish they would get better advisors in this and other fields.

Unlike England, Scotland has historically had good relations with Russia.

However, the best tactic IMO is to vote for independence via the SNP because after independence you can vote for whoever you like. Without independence you get Reform UK.
