‘Police in England, Wales and NI too overworked to investigate crimes properly’ – Any word on Scotland with 28% more officers?

Professor John Robertson OBA In the Guardian today, the above, and: Overworked police lack the resources, time and experience to investigate crimes properly, leading to victims being failed and an erosion in faith in law enforcement, an official report has found. The report by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary, Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) says that the rate of positive outcomes – when police identify a suspect and they face justice – has crashed from 25% in England and Wales a decade ago to 11% in 2024. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/mar/27/police-too-overworked-to-investigate-crimes-properly-england-wales-northern-ireland Predictably, when I see that kind of thing, then like a tennis beginner frantically … Continue reading ‘Police in England, Wales and NI too overworked to investigate crimes properly’ – Any word on Scotland with 28% more officers?

In Wales, 25 children were given 10 times the correct dose in just two years but they don’t seem to have an Anas Sarwar to creepily take advantage of the family

By stewartb In an ideal world, actions could be taken which would lead to the elimination of all medical errors in hospital settings. This would of course deprive Mr Sarwar of one of his favoured political ploys  viz. the use of the ‘salient exemplar’. Unionist politicians commenting on Scotland favour a tactic that seeks to exploit the built-in tendency of the human brain to conflate the aberrant with the norm. Mr Sarwar – aided and abetted by a supportive mainstream media that favours the avoidance of context, perspective and positivity when reporting Scotland – is well practised at this.  From Psychology … Continue reading In Wales, 25 children were given 10 times the correct dose in just two years but they don’t seem to have an Anas Sarwar to creepily take advantage of the family

oversight of this hospital for a long period of time. Professor John Robertson OBA Above, Anas Sarwar trying to fabricate a wider hospital safety crisis out of a small number of incidents in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, with a view to attacking the SNP Government’s oversight. From Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratios October 2023 to September 2024, published on 11 February 2025, QEUH had a lower than average Standardised Mortality Ratio, at 0.93, than the Scottish average of 1.0. 15 hospitals had a worse ratio of more than 1.0.1 If an HSMR value for a hospital is less than one, … Continue reading This is a safer than average hospital being used by Anas Sarwar to gaslight you

Return of the Creepy Uncle

Professor John Robertson OBA Thanks to Jim Draper for alerting me to this. On STV News at 6 last night: An eight-week-old baby is in critical condition after he was given ten times the correct dose of paracetamol at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. The Shadow Health Secretary is Sandesh Gulhane MSP but, as often before, Anas Sarwar is wheeled out to suggest a crisis in one hospital on the basis of one dosing mistake. Find a Scottish hospital, a baby made very ill or dying, one will do, and he is by magic quickly onscreen to imply … Continue reading Return of the Creepy Uncle

As BBC and Audit Scotland accuse SNP Government of a ‘failure to plan’ for ‘soaring’ pupil support needs why didn’t they mention that there are now THREE TIMES as many Behaviour Support staff and 24% more Pupil Support Assistants?

Professor John Robertson OBA, former schoolteacher, Education lecturer and Associate Dean for Quality Assurance In February 2025, BBC Scotland platformed an Audit Scotland report which they characterised as a ‘Failure to plan’ over soaring pupil support needs: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0q1wyeevvgo Also, of course, they allowed the Conservative and Labour education spokespersons to use the report to accuse the Scottish Government of a ‘shameful failure.’ They did not offer any facts or figures such as these below, or the previous year’s version of them. From School support staff statistics, published yesterday, we can see that between 2018 and 2024, there was: Now, some … Continue reading As BBC and Audit Scotland accuse SNP Government of a ‘failure to plan’ for ‘soaring’ pupil support needs why didn’t they mention that there are now THREE TIMES as many Behaviour Support staff and 24% more Pupil Support Assistants?

Why has there been a massive but unreported reduction in the number of children on the child protection register in Scotland and a widening gap with the other 3 nations?

Professor John Robertson OBA, former Faculty Research Ethics Chair This caught me off-guard today. I was astonished to read this and to see that it is not a major news item for ‘our’ media. From the Scottish Government, yesterday: On 31 July 2024, 2,129 children were on the child protection register, representing a 3% increase on 2023 (2,077) and a 26% decrease on 2014 (2,877). During the year, 3,167 children were registered onto the child protection register, representing a 2% decrease on 2022-23 (3,234) and a 31% decrease on 2013-14 (4,622). https://www.gov.scot/publications/childrens-social-work-statistics-child-protection-2023-24/ These are massive reductions in only 10 years … Continue reading Why has there been a massive but unreported reduction in the number of children on the child protection register in Scotland and a widening gap with the other 3 nations?
