The Herald today, has:
Leading scientists, land managers and environmental campaigners have set out what must be done to save Scotland’s ancient forest, saying, “we must not stand by and see them lost”. The group have published a paper outlining the steps required to overcome threats to Scotland’s “magnificent formations of nature”, Caledonian pinewoods. The risks it details include overgrazing by excessive deer numbers, inappropriate fencing, mounding and planting, and the invasion of non-native species, including rhododendrons.
I’m with the campaigners on this but, as often before, the Herald’s selective bias is revealed here. Why have they not offered us this context?
From Forest Research, Time Series in 2024:
In the period of SNP administration in Scotland, from 2008 to 2024, Scotland planted 131 460 new trees including 67 000 broadleaves.
England, with 10 times the population and nearly twice the landmass, only planted 40 720, less than a third.
As for Labour-run Wales – 7 800!

The Herod has not provided the contextual information to which you refer, because they are just copying and pasting from a press release by a campaign group.
Any contextual information which might have been provided and which might have indicated Scotland was doing relatively well would be ignored.

The figures in this comment are, in tech ical terms, mince!
From STV: “Between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024, a total of 15,000 hectares of new woodland was created across Scotland.”
This equates to c30 million trees in ONE YEAR!
