Not one English river but nearly 60% of Scottish rivers in good health or better in 2024

Professor John Robertson OBA

From BBC Wales and broadcast on BBC Breakfast, today:

The biggest legal claim ever brought in the UK over environmental pollution in the country has been filed at the High Court. Almost 4,000 people have signed up to the lawsuit against major poultry producers and a water company over allegations of “extensive and widespread pollution” in three rivers – the Wye, Lugg and Usk. They argue the state of the rivers in recent years has severely affected local businesses, property values and people’s enjoyment of the area, and are seeking “substantial damages”.

From The Rivers Trust – State of Our Rivers Report 2024, we see that no English rivers were in good overall health in 2024. https://www.theriverstrust.org/

In Scotland, from SEPA Water Environment Hub and 2024 bathing water reports, we see that 57% had good or better status in 2022-2024. https://www.sepa.org.uk/environment/water/
