Sneaked out on Friday afternoon by UK Labour Government to successfully avoid ‘Scottish’ media coverage, 60 000 disabled Scots many on below national average wage, to be stripped of winter fuel payment by tax clawback

Only in the Sunday Telegraph, as far as I can see, the above exposure of the plans to claw back the winter fuel allowance from 0.6 million disabled people earning £35 000, through the tax system. Per head, this means around 60 000 disabled Scots, many earning below the UK average annual wage of £38 000pa, will have the winter fuel allowance, in the coldest parts of the UK, stripped away, for government savings tiny compared with that which a proper wealth tax might generate.

These are the words below, from Equality analysis for Winter Fuel Payments 2025, sneaked out just before the weekend on Friday 22 August 2025:

Using the FRS [Family Resources Survey] for those with an income at or below £35,000, 37% (3.3 million) self-reported having a disability and may be beneficiaries of the new policy (newly entitled to the WFP). In comparison, 31% (0.6 million) of those with an income above £35,000 were self-reported as having a disability; there is no cash change for this group, but they are affected by the change because they will receive a payment which will then be taken back through the tax system.

Is there any media coverage to inform these Scottish citizens?

Scottish’ Daily Express? Nope, the English one.

BBC Scotland? Don’t make me laugh – nothing.

Even if they had published the report last Thursday, would ‘our’ media have covered it?

  1. “Is there any media coverage to inform these Scottish citizens”

Well that would then result in a negative for Labour and we cannot have that …..what with the Scottish elections coming up next year….

Tactical and partisan omissions by the media is what will still encourage some voters in Scotland to still vote for Labour…..mind you some voters will always vote for Labour….. as they , as voters, are so committed to the UK as a State , that they then see the only real opposition to the SNP in Scotland is the Labour party….that will then , they assume, help to sustain their UK State (with Scotland still being a part of it….as in Scotland being a #PrisonerOfTheUKState)………

A “Cut off your nose to spite your face” position…….

Then there is also “none so blind as those who will not see” position……

Also ” “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink” position….

Alas with some people within Scotland ……those quotes above are the constant ‘positions’ that they, as some people in Scotland, always seem to be at….. as a ‘position’…… indeed as a firm ‘position’……mainly for reasons connected to the constitutional question.

Beggars belief….. but it is ….what it is….which is hugely unfortunate for the rest of us within Scotland, who have opposing positions to those others within Scotland ….as we see ourselves as only being citizens of Scotland and do not want to be citizens within their UK State…..now or in the future.

However the penny, for some, is seemingly taking a Hell of a lot of time …to finally drop……here’s hoping that penny finally drops for them….some time sooner rather than later (as in too late….come the 2029 UK GE).

  2. I hope I am allowed to do this….but I have just read an absolutely great comment on WGD by a regular (and good) contributor to that blog which I wholeheartedly agree with….as it is so spot on….in respect to what is happening within the UK…..and also Scotland.

It’s under the August 21st WGD post entitled “Demonisation by the right, independence supporters could be next”.

The comment is at 10.46pm on August 23rd under that above post by WGD….

I do hope that the regular contributor does not object to my highlighting his comment as I do so in the spirit of one who applauds him for his most astute observation and also his well communicated (written) comment….and I also hope that the host on TUS also does not mind me noting (highlighting) this as well…..as every little bit helps…..the cause….of Scottish independence…..no matter where the source is to be found…..that notes a truth on what’s what.

Give it a read as it is very good….as are many of the comments by various contributors on here (TUS) too…..as are the various Posts on TUS by the host himself of this great site as well….obviously.

  3. Friends,

I continue to struggle these days and ageing is not helping, but have since the last crowd funder (£15k) been able to ‘outsource’ some of the work – reading, posting and reposting work by readers, some research, some calculations, monitoring several email and social media accounts and so on.

Already, the latest crowd funder looks like, at the very least, seriously reducing my scope to pay for that.

So, apologies if you make a great comment and it stays at just that.

I hope to continue my own media monitoring core stuff, solo.

      1. Thanks AH. I really appreciate your long-time support.

It’s sobering that nearly 2 000 subscribe to the blog and get every post emailed to them, around 15-20 000 see the posts across social media and barely 100 thinks it’s worth so much as fiver.

    1. Listen you do so much….that then inspires people like me to respond via a comment on your site…..which I personally am more than happy that it stays as a comment on a post that you have done….

One often reads that certain individuals view blogs like this as merely being an “echo chamber”….but really it is a lifeline to so many people like me…..

To share information sadly lacking in the MSM.

To vent one’s frustration at feeling so disempowered within this UK State.

To release pent up anger at the injustice of it all.

To highlight the bias and unfair treatment of those of us who support Scottish independence compared to those who support the UK State.

To promote the hypocrisy and double standards both the UK media and UK political parties apply to themselves compared to how they apply a strict and seemingly inflexible approach to their treatment towards the Scottish government (SNP)……and also to those of us who both support the SNP and too Scottish independence….

TUS does a great job in delivering facts, honest details , support to the cause of independence and also a narrative that is sadly lacking within the UK for us who support Scottish independence…..(and is also sadly lacking for the SNP as the Scottish government as well).

So yes , it is indeed a huge injustice that your site is , as you state looking already as if the ” latest crowd funder looks like, at the very least, seriously reducing my scope to pay for that” as in for all of the extensive research and work that you do for this wonderful pro Indy site…..

Especially when one looks at how much money is donated to various rogue UK political parties and also money spent on buying certain UK newspapers, although there are various publications who are seeing reduced readership figures….but they are still being bought and read by some including their online versions via subscriptions…….

If there was any real justice your readership and also your financial support for all the excellent work that you do, would then be far in excess of what you receive now …….and dare I also say , that you would then receive far more money donated to your site….. than the (waste of) money that the various UK rogues receive….for lying and promoting propaganda on behalf of their crap UK State…..

Take Care…..as your valuable and excellent contribution to Scottish independence will never ever be forgotten ……but it , as a contribution, deserves far far more of a reward to ease the burden that you must be under….burden as in….with work that is.

I am sure you already know the high regard that people have for you…..however with reality there also always needs to be a practical side ….as in financial support….you put in the hours so that deserves financial support…. surely….I hope you do reach your goal/target….you so deserve to.

      1. Thanks so much Liz

        Very kind comments, much appreciated.

Your comments are generally very well received by other readers so keep em coming.

As well as cutting work, I’m thinking the blog’s ID is better served if it focuses on the kind of factchecking with hard stats.

        Very best wishes

  4. John, I was one of the guilty, failing to fund. I didn’t send cash because I’m not a fan of this format. I need something I can reference easily and believe your hard work would achieve a lot more readers, contributors and subscribers if the format was more easily navigated. Maybe it’s just me of course, and nothing I’ve said can take away from the great work you do. If you do another funder I will send cash this time. John Lawson
