The Times yesterday had the above and:

Gosh, will that make it harder to find private rented accommodation, then? That’s clearly what they’re trying to say but, wait a minute, does that necessarily mean there is now less accommodation? Why doesn’t the Times give us the data on the reducing availability of accommodation? Well, that’s because there is more!

See:

From Housing statistics: Scottish Landlord Register data published today, we can see that the number of registered landlords in Scotland has fallen slightly, by 1.1% or around 2 000, but the number of registered properties available to rent has grown steadily over the last three years, by 3.2% or around 11 000. https://www.gov.scot/publications/scottish-landlord-register-data/

What explains this, to some of us, counter-intuitive trend? Business degree anyone? Some kind of ‘rationalisation?

  1. The simplest explanation is that smaller landlords are selling properties to bigger organisations. In addition, there is a growing market in ‘buy-to-rent’ new builds.

  2. I’ve never understood the ”threat” from landlords that if they stop being landlords that there will be fewer properties available for use . Will their properties somehow disappear into the ether or will they , in a fit of pique , demolish them to spite the nasty SNP ? That’ll teach them , eh ?

Or , more likely , will they sell their property so that someone else may use it , either to live in or to let !

  3. Not in Edinburgh re social housing.

Here is the Lab/Tory English controlled council’s excuse for shutting down access to social housing in Edinburgh…I won’t say what I would like to it wouldn’t be nice.

    Important: Please Read!

The Council has taken the difficult decision to temporarily pause advertising council properties through Key to Choice.

Housing and Homelessness services are currently under exceptional pressure which means the Council is not able to meet its statutory duties to accommodate people assessed as homeless.

By pausing adverts for council homes, it will allow the Council to temporarily prioritise available properties for people who:

    require temporary accommodation
are assessed as homeless and who are currently in unsuitable temporary accommodation
    have Gold Priority
have Urgent Gold Priority and assessed as a delayed discharge from hospital.

Housing Association and Housing Co-ops homes will still be advertised.

This decision will be reviewed in December 2025. Please check this webpage for any updates.

  4. The bullshit, sorry, article by Greig Cameron, Scottish Business Editor with “Landlords ‘vilified’ by SNP leaving sector in droves ” is big on the hyperbole https://archive.ph/1l9Q0 but actually pirates the original DM article to add additional publicity to John Blackwood’s (CEO of SAL) “We are hearing more often from landlords, many with homes that meet or exceed regulatory standards, who are choosing to exit”, note the royal wee, and the vaguery of ‘more often’…

In truth some greedy bastirts have packed in fleecing Scots and sold off their ‘portfolio’ to the corporate ‘fleecers’, that’s about it….

It’s yet another “What have the Romans ever done for us” sketch, so I fully expect Dieseler to have Sarwar on tomorrow morning waxing lyrical on what he will do WHEN elected FM, avoiding the phrase “read my lips” like the plague…
