‘We share the same island. We’re similar sorts of people.’

Our fellow islanders?

Andy Maciver – ‘We share the same island. We’re similar sorts of people.’

Compare and contrast (examples):

(i) voting by majority to reject the Tory Party at Westminster elections since c. 1956, i.e. c. 69 years – that sort of similarity?

(ii) voting by majority to remain as member of the EU – that sort of similarity?

(iii) c. 45% voting in 2014 to dissolve the Union and according to opinion polls, now even more – that sort of similarity?

(iv) enough citizens in Scotland voting to elect a political party to govern in Edinburgh that: (a) supports the dissolution of the Union: (b) rejects nuclear power in Scotland, (c) rejects the presence of nuclear weapons in Scotland; (d) spends in order to reduce child poverty (Scottish Child Payment); (e) continues to cover costs of university tuition fees; (f) acts to make income tax more progressive. Scotland’s electorate has had the option to show their preference for the policy positions of British political parties vying to govern Scotland, British parties with similar policy positions to those elected to govern England. But they have chosen not to – that sort of similarity?

  2. Maciver’s erroneous argument is that is Scots who view themselves as the ‘Exceptionalists’ rather than the English, as the marchers clip so vividly exampled in carrying the British flag and chanting ‘Rule Britannia’… – Such a march in Scotland is unthinkable…

Yes, we do all sorts of things differently and mostly better than England, but that’s more down to a SG paying attention to what the public want to see compared to a WM who tell the public what they are allowed to get – England is slowly realising this along with how untrustworthy MSM has become – The Scots learned that almost a decade ago and have held an increasing distrust of the BBC et al ever since…

The real difference was wonderfully expressed by James Hawes in this clip from a ‘Holyrood Sources’ episode https://www.youtube.com/shorts/vh10YUNxUHI – Unfortunately the actual episode was derailed from understanding how England has been systematically hoodwinked by the few with an ‘Empire’ frame of mind in the south of England, into condemnation of SNP makeup…

  3. We do have shared values lets be honest but where we don’t in key areas as shown there is ‘no Scots/Scotland are/is better and that is where their media has a hugely important role to play. To them any ‘dissident Yes Scots must conform or align themselves with English values; there is no middle ground. The MS English Media don’t just attack the SNP and the Scottish government they actively promote England in its many forms culturally etc. Where they HAVE to expose any failures of wrong doing it is mitigated by a ‘good news’ storyline hence any sporting achievements are given extensive coverage all to make the English feel good about themselves and of course to make Scots feel the opposite .

  4. The phrase “pooling and sharing” so beloved by Scottish unionists as a reason for Scotland not having independence has been totally trashed by Brexit.

English voters have demonstrated that they have no interest in pooling or sharing with anyone else.

Anything of value in Scotland invariably ends up in England which has a long history of exploiting other countries’ resources for their own benefit.

England is doing a very good job of showing the world that they consider themselves to be entitled and exceptional.

This is not a part of Scottish culture or psyche.

    Scotland is not England.
