Teenage pregnancies plummet after 18 years to reveal wider progress under SNP

Professor John Robertson OBA

From Teenage pregnancies Year of conception, ending 31 December 2023 published today:

The teenage pregnancy rate in Scotland increased slightly from 25.5 per 1,000 women in 2022 to 25.8 in 2023. This is equal to 3,801 teenage pregnancies in 2023 (76 more than in 2022).

From the above graph you can see that teenage pregnancies were running at 55-57 per year in the last years of the Labour/Lib Dem coalition and peaking in 2005-2008, more than twice as many as in recent years.

Why is this such an important statistic and reflective of wider achievements by the government in the last 18 years?

From Grok:

A falling teenage pregnancy statistic generally indicates a decrease in the number or rate of pregnancies among teenagers (typically ages 15–19) over a specific period. This can reflect several underlying trends or factors:

  1. Increased Access to Education and Contraception: Greater availability of sex education, contraceptives, and reproductive health services may lead to fewer unplanned pregnancies. Programs promoting safe sex and family planning can empower teens to make informed choices.
  2. Cultural and Behavioral Shifts: Changing social norms, such as delayed sexual activity, prioritization of education, or career aspirations, may reduce the likelihood of early pregnancy. Teens may also be more aware of the challenges associated with early parenthood.
  3. Economic and Social Factors: Improved economic conditions or opportunities for young people, such as access to higher education or employment, can correlate with lower teen pregnancy rates. Conversely, in some cases, economic hardship might lead to cautious behavior regarding family planning.
  4. Technology and Media Influence: Increased access to information through the internet and media can raise awareness about the consequences of unprotected sex and the benefits of delaying parenthood.
  5. Policy and Public Health Initiatives: Government or community programs targeting teen pregnancy prevention, such as school-based health initiatives or campaigns, may contribute to the decline.
