Domestic abuse previous – another factor in Scotland’s lack of riots last summer?

Professor John Robertson OBA

From the Guardian today, this striking information:

Two out of every five people arrested after participating in last summer’s riots had been previously reported to the police for domestic abuse, the Guardian can disclose. Police data released under freedom of information (FoI) laws shows that 41% of 899 people arrested for taking part in the violent disorder last July and August had been reported for crimes associated with intimate partner violence.

For those arrested by one police force, this figure was as high as 68%. Previous offences include actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm, stalking, breach of restraint and non-molestation orders, controlling coercive behaviour and criminal damage.

There were no riots in Scotland last summer. These factors have already been identified as influential:

From the Safer Communities and Justice Statistics Monthly Data Report : July 2024 edition:

Crime has fallen by 53% since 2008-09. Results from the Scottish Crime and Justice Survey (SCJS) show that around 1 in 10 adults were victims of crime in 2021-22 (10.0%) compared to 1 in 5 in 2008-09 (20.4%). The estimated number of crimes fell by 53% over the same period, and by 18% since 2017-18.

IMPORTANT – This is not just based on police reporting which is known to understate the actual level of crime but on The Scottish Crime and Justice Survey (SCJS), a large-scale (5 500 interviews) social survey which asks people about their experiences and perceptions of crime in Scotland and is considered ‘gold standard’ research methodology ie very accurate.

In crude terms, you’re half as likely to be victim of crime than you were 17 years ago. How’s that for real news utterly unacceptable for our MSM’s agenda?

With particular regard to racism:

The facts, from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS), in the graph above and in the actual data, below:

So, race-based hate crimes are down by almost exactly 1 000 from 2014 to 2020 and judging by the graph above continued to fall under Humza Yousaf in 2023.

Despite this massive fall, there are actually slightly more police officers, as of March 2024, than there were, 17 years ago, at the end of the last Labour Government in March 2007:

From Police Scotland data, 7 May 2024:

Scotland’s Chief Statistician has published statistics on Police Officer Quarterly Strength, which gives the number of full-time equivalent police officers employed by Police Scotland.

The key findings of the statistics are:

To these we can, in the light of today’s report in the Guardian, this:

Domestic abuse TWICE as common in England and Wales as in Scotland

From the Scottish Government’s Safer Communities Directorate today, the above graph and:

The police recorded 63,867 incidents of domestic abuse in 2023-24, an increase of 3% compared to the previous year. This is the first year this figure has shown an increase since 2020-21.1

Note, from Section 1.2 of the full report:

The Act [in 2018] did not alter the way in which statistics on the volume of domestic abuse incidents reported to the police are collected and produced. As such its impact on this data is likely to be limited, albeit the associated awareness campaign to raise public understanding of domestic abuse, and to encourage victims to seek support may have had a role in the increased number of incidents seen during the years following the introduction of the act.

All things being equal, to take account of the 11 times greater population, we might expect the figure for England and Wales to be 11 times higher, that is around 700 000, but it was in fact, for 2022-23 (latest available) 1.45 million2, TWICE as high.

No doubt some will say this is pointless whitabootery but imagine that it was the other way round and domestic abuse incidents were twice as common in Scotland – ‘Scotland domestic abuse capital of UK!

Lower crime, lower hate crime based on race, more police officers and lower domestic abuse = no riots
