New poll suggests Scots massively and most sympathetic to eradicating child poverty

Professor John Robertson OBA

Thanks to stewartb for alerting me to this:

The above data come in response to the question: Do you agree or disagree with the following?: No child in the UK should be born into poverty, gathered by Public First between 11th and 14th March 2025.

Notably Scots by 84% are the group most likely to support this notion.

These results seem perhaps, at first sight, contrary to earlier polls suggesting that Scots (In this, only 181 sample out of UK 2 008) like others across the UK, only really care, in terms of voting preferences about three issues – cost of living, health and immigration (Scotland too). The message has seemed to be the that the SNP should, of course, continue with it’s ground-breaking initiatives to eradicate child poverty but that its campaigning should focus more on those first three issues. It’s maybe a sad commentary but it seems many voters care little for child poverty and are even cynical about the need for such initiatives as the child payment.

Does this latest poll say otherwise and should it affect campaigning?

  1. “New poll suggests Scots massively and most sympathetic to eradicating child poverty”

I assume that includes Scots who voted for Labour in the last GE and now see that the party that they (wrongly) thought they were voting for i.e. a different kind of Labour party, are not that kind of Labour party at all, but instead some of those voters in Scotland now realise that Starmer’s Labour party are just Tories in all but party name.

What we now witness happening is that various Labour MP’s and Labour government ministers are doing the media rounds trying to shield Starmer in defending his terrible Labour policies and his divisive rhetoric.

Terrible Labour policies and terribly divisive rhetoric from Keir Starmer as Labour leader that then negatively impact the most vulnerable within their UK. (that is the poorest , those who are disabled and it also impacts those who seek refuge in the UK from other countries).

They also, as Labour MP’s and Labour government Ministers, make excuses (blame others) as to why Labour’s pledges, pre the GE last year, are still unfulfilled as pledges.

Indeed they, Labour when they were the official opposition, harangued the Tories when they were in power prior to the GE for their lack of action on energy prices, food prices etc, yet Labour as the new UK government have not reversed that dire position on the cost of living crisis within the UK since they came to power last yearin July.

Coincidentally we also saw Tory MP’s and Tory government ministers also trying to defend and shield both Boris Johnson as the former Tory PM and also Liz Truss as the former Tory PM when they too , as Tory politicians, did the media rounds.

Labour MP’s and also those who are elevated to a ministerial position within the UK government are still meant to be those who represent all of their constituents in the areas that they (supposedly are meant to) represent at WM, as opposed to them, as Labour MP’s , just constantly adopting a slavish allegiance to and a compliance only with what the party wants to do and so then what the party does do via policies that negatively impacts some of their constituents .

    Poverty kills. Austerity also kills.

UK governments who adopts policies that create even more poverty and suffering are then responsible for the deaths that result because of their bad policies that target the most vulnerable , their lack of action , their lack of compassion and so basically their lack of humanity in them, as a government, intentionally not doing more to try to eradicate poverty for both adults and children. (in fact they seem to be doing the opposite).

Vote SNP in 2026 via a majority or be subjected to UK rule and UK policies that will then ignore that we, within Scotland, are those who are “massively and most sympathetic to eradicating child poverty”. We will be ignored (again) as our opinion does not count in their sh*t UK State.

  2. I saw a post I think via Bluesky yesterday about the lack of adequate maternal services and care in England resulting in hundreds of babies dying per year. How disgraceful, it’s deliberate of course, running down the EngNHS.
Most people are of the ‘if you can’t feed ’em don’t breed ’em’ mentality which is disgusting.
I wonder who’ll work in the shops and cafes and factories (those that are left) and fire services and NHS (if it’s still a thing), keep the lights on and such services, pay into the system re pensions etc when the folks who blame the parents for having to raise children in poverty., get old.
