Professor John Robertson OBA
Thanks to Dottie for alerting me to this:
In the Guardian today, the above and:
The wait for family-size social housing has risen to more than 100 years in parts of England, which charities have condemned as “ludicrous” and a “national scandal”. Analysis from the National Housing Federation (NHF), Crisis and Shelter found that in 32 local authority areas across England, the wait for a home with at least three bedrooms was longer than 18 years – the duration of an entire childhood. The worst three councils, all of which are in London, have waiting lists exceeding 100 years, while nine local authorities have waiting lists of more than 50 years.

I can’t find the figures for this year in Scotland, but in August 2023, Miles Briggs MSP was able to reveal:
The Scottish Government’s “failure to prioritise the social housing emergency” has been branded “disgraceful” after it was revealed average waiting times for social housing are longer than a year in most councils. Freedom of information data showed that in 21 of the 29 councils which responded, average waiting times for social housing were longer than 12 months.

having spoken to miles briggs it is clear, to me, that he is a complete waste of space in Scotland. Just one more bought and sold for English gold.

To be perfectly fair John, it IS a national scandal, and despite SG’s best efforts over the last 15 years in addressing the issues, their hands have been tied also.
In the 1960s anyone could aspire to own their own home and the majority did, inequality had shrunk to unheard of levels, and that irked the moneyed class who had exploited rentierism for centuries, and those who wished to picky back the ‘tradition’.
By the time SG had been created, the die was cast, the moneyed class were already back in control.
It is pointless citing Miles Briggs on anything – He is not interested in improving the lot of the general populace any more than ‘Sarwarse wi teeth’ or ‘Dam Baillie’ or ‘ACH-him’, or ‘Findlay wotsit’ – All of them have an abiding belief of assets not belonging to any but the rentier class, the ‘natural order of things’ – Where might we find thousands of battle weary soldiers promised a land fit for heroes 70 years later ?

The Scottish Gov committed to build or renovate 6000 affordable houses a year. Private builders build 17,000. Covid held up house building. 46,000 less houses would have been built. Affordable homes are being built all around Scotland by the Scottish Gov.
Scottish population has increased since Devolution 2000. Increased from 5 million to 5.4million. 50,000+ people die every year. Usually after a long life. 79 average life expectancy. Women outlive men by 5 years, worldwide.
There are enough houses in Scotland but some are in the wrong place for families and employment. Too far. More people are working from home.

Always worth remembering that Myles Briggs is the Scottish Parliament’s answer to Nadine Dorries. Sense and reason not expected.
