‘Bed-blocking’ falls for third month in a row

Professor John Robertson OBA

From Public Health Scotland, today:

In February 2025 the average number of beds occupied per day due to people delayed in hospital was 1,946. Compared to the previous three months, this is less than January 2025 (1,964), December 2024 (1,991) and November 2024 (2,023).

What could be enabling this?

  1. The absence of ”positive ” reports of Scotland’s NHS ( and other devolved areas ) is explained by the use by MSM of their updated news algorithm .

It was formerly called ”Talk down the SNP ” but , due to recent polling , it has been redefined as ”FFS talk down the SNP !” although in some quarters it is known as ”What the F*ck is that Sarwar saying now !”

  2. Let’s put some reality to the ‘bed blocking’ hype, so often used in a politically accusative sense, it could be caused by anything from slow recovery to modifications required at the patient’s home – Swapping rooms around, installation of a grab rail, a different type of bath, a ramp, an ’emergency alert’ system etc., then finally inspection and signing it off – These issues typically will turn up when the final assessment of the patient and their needs is carried out, rarely is it possible to gauge in advance, which then leads to delayed discharge..

A hospital should never be regarded as a production line, but all too often is by those with a political agenda…..
