Rape and other sexual convictions – Scotland leads with 29% and 108% increases in one year despite far fewer incidents

The Talking-up Scotland fund raiser, finishing in 5 days, to enable the recruitment of some research assistance, in order to take pressure off me [74 in June and tiring] and hopefully to further improve the blog, has made a good start. The Guardian‘s Lizzie Dearden, today has:

UK rape victims are waiting too long for court cases, say top lawyers

There’s no mention of the scandal of low conviction rates.

From Criminal Proceedings in Scotland 2022-23, there was a 63% increase from 2014, in people proceeded against for rape and attempted rape and a 108% increase in convictions for these.

Comparisons are not simple but can be done.

Rape offences 2-3 times higher in England & Wales than in Scotland

The police in Scotland recorded 2,529 rape or attempted rape crimes between in 2022/23, compared with 2,498 rape crimes in the previous reporting year.

All things being equal, per head of population with 11 times that, we might expect there to have been 27 819 cases in England & Wales.

There were 68 949, up from 16 038 ten years before. Between two and three times as many.

  1. They need to change the corroboration rule to get more convictions. There is usually no corroboration witness in sexual abuse attacks. Just by the nature of the attempt of the crime. Misogynist bullies can get away with it. One person’s word against another in some cases.

  2. Abused women do not get legal aid. They have to live in unsafe abusive places. Women who co habit. The majority they do not have equal rights. They have to put in a claim within a year. (1/3). It can cost £thousands and take years. They do not get legal aid. They have to stay in unsafe abusive places and cannot get away.

Letting agencies illegally charge 6 months up front rent and deposit. Even to people with good credit. Increasing homelessness.
