Scotland now nearly as forested as it was 1 000 years ago and 80% more forested than England

The Talking-up Scotland fund raiser [closing 28 February] primarily to enable the recruitment of some research assistance, in order to take pressure off me [74 in June and tiring] and hopefully to further improve the blog, has made a good start. By Professor John Robertson OBA, former Chair Faculty Research Ethics Committee, UWS and Woodland Correspondent 2025 and 2025

Based on figures from Our world in Data, Scotland has been reforesting at an accelerating pace, is now more forested than at the time of Bannockburn and 80% more so thn England today.

The SNP in government has played a big part in maintaining this pace.

From Forest Research, Time Series in 2024:

In the period of SNP administration in Scotland, from 2008 to 2024:

Scotland planted 131 460 new trees including 67 000 broadleaves.

England, with 10 times the population and nearly twice the landmass, only planted 40 720, less than a third.

As for Labour-run Wales – 7 800!

  1. Aye, Robertson of the Woodland Realm. I hope you have some dark green attire to match.

Pretty impressive planting figures and good to see a bit of diversity rather than just endless pines forests.

I am sure that this excellent news will be covered in depth by “Call Kaye”, although she probably won’t mention the Bannockburn bit. 🙂

  2. Those deciduous numbers are pretty damned impressive – The way climate change seems to be going, those deep rooted trees will help sink increasing rainfall as well as CO2 – I’ve seen acres of conifers collapse like a pack of cards under certain conditions, invariably with a lone birch left standing….

  3. As an ageing 75yo with 5 grandchildren this was always very high on my agenda and why I have been an SNP member for many years.
