Canadian Government has to buy wee Norwegian ferry second-hand for private company operating only 3 and losing 2, at last minute, and sail it round the warmer, calmer edges of the Atlantic for a month and 10 000 miles

From CBC, today:

New ferry for beleaguered P.E.I.-N.S. service making its way across Atlantic Ocean – The much-anticipated ferry slated for service between Wood Islands, P.E.I., and Caribou, N.S., is crossing the Atlantic Ocean on its way to the Maritimes, Transport Canada says.

The ferry, which has been renamed MV Northumberland from MV Fanafjord, was acquired by Transport Canada on Dec. 12. It began its voyage from Norway to Canada on Dec. 23. The federal government paid about $40 million for the vessel.

To avoid risks posed by winter conditions in the North Atlantic, the ferry moved south toward Cape Verde, off the coast of Africa, where it made a stop Jan. 3. “It will then continue its journey to Antigua and Barbuda, before turning north towards Bermuda and the east coast of North America on its way to Canada,” said Transport Canada spokesperson Flavio Nienow.

The route (c 10 000 miles):

Why did the Canadian Government have to buy a replacement boat for Northumberland Ferries Ltd. (a private company) in this way? They only had three vessels, one was scrapped after a fire in 2022 and another ran aground in September 2024 and was out of service for weeks.

This won’t just be a ferry fiasco for the locals but a FFF! Will they march on parliament or call for resignations? Nope, not a word because the media have barely reported it. Will the private shareholders lose their dividends? What do you think?

Will that Mull ferry committee chair visit to learn how to improve CalMac?

  1. Canada takes a very different approach to public transport, thus they don’t have to tolerate business interests funding propaganda campaigns via the media to do a hostile takeover, nor have to tolerate it being turned into a political football by agitators seeking to oust a particular political party from power….

Canadians refer to this as being ‘normal’….
