On BBC Breakfast today, we see an extended report on high and increasing water bills and hardship for the less well off, across England.
From Policy Mogul, AI assisted fact checker, on 3 November 2024:
Scottish taxpayers pay less for their water than their English counterparts, thanks to public ownership, with the average water bill in Scotland around £438 a year – £35 a year cheaper than the average bill of £473 in England.
The SNP also ensures that money raised from water bills is re-invested in the water network – and not the pockets of executives and private shareholders.

Water, because it is essential for life is one of the ‘commons’ and should be under public control. That an be nationalisation or local authority control (as Glasgow’s was under Glasgow Corporation, or as Strathclyde’s was, after regionalisation. Indeed,it was the local referendum organised by Strathclyde Regional Council c1990 which kept water in Scotland out of the privatisation that occurred in England and Wales.
While Glasgow Corporation in the Victorian years was controlled by the wealthy businessMEN, who dominated civic society at the time and were avowed capitalists, they realised that their lifestyle was underpinned by the efforts of hundreds of thousands of ordinary working people and if these people became unwell then the rich people’s lifestyle would suffer and, since disease is no respecter of social class, their health and lives were at risk, too.
So, water and sewerage systems were established, parks created, public health systems setup, including public baths and wash houses, schools and libraries were established because an educated proletariat was required to develop industry and commerce.
There are,of course other and better humanitarian and communitarian arguments, but, in their own interests, capitalists have to recognise that there are’ mom on goods’.

Indeed, read this though and be scared. If any British/English HQ’d party is allowed to take control of Holyurood again, day one they will sell off Scottish Water. They started the process last time they robbed Scotland during their ten years at the helm, and that will be their first priority, sell Scotland’s water to private companies I mean the money they would make is off the scale…yikes unless Scotland keeps their only real Scottish party, the SNP at the helm at Holyrood expect Scotland to be sold, lock, stock and barrel.
