There’s no mention of Darling’s move from the hard left to the Blair Cabinet. There’s no reference to his role in a divisive referendum campaign. There’s no mention of his 2007 mistake in the loss of 25 million British Citizens personal data or of his failure to protect 5 million low earners in 2008 from becoming worse off after a tax rate reduction that only benefited the better off or, most shocking, when he changed the designation of his second home four times in four years, allowing him to claim for the costs of his family home in Edinburgh, and to buy and furnish a flat in London.
But, when the former SNP leader dies, BBC Scotland, have a very different reaction:

Sheeesh, we know who has a ‘less pleasant side.’
What else did BBC Scotland have to say about Darling?
James Cook – Alistair Darling: ‘Serious, discreet and driven by fairness’ https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-67581555
Fairness? Expenses mentioned? My dear chap? This is no time for that!
I wonder, what did Alex Salmond have to say when Darling died?
Alistair Darling: Alex Salmond praises ‘formidable’ referendum rival https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-67580566
Expenses? Anything bad? Quite the opposite – not a bad word said – kindness, grace, charm.

No surprise at that!

There are many things we will have to bite our tongues on just now. It does seem though that some presenters just can’t help themselves. If, like quite a few others, they disliked the man while alive, then they need only report the sad news that he has died. We don’t need or want their personal opinions. Of course, they are also tripping over themselves to interview people like John Swinney and Nicola Sturgeon in the hope that somebody will drop them a scoop. As if!

I was pleasantly surprised to read the warm and affectionate statement from my Glasgow University contemporary, Andrew Neill, whose right wing views and propagandising are well-known. It also indicated that he knew Mr Salmond well and, despite differences in political views they could still relate on a human, personal level.

When you think about it, most of us have friends and relatives who don’t share our political or personal opinions. It would be no different for Alex Salmond who was, by all accounts, a sociable fellow.

This was deleted in less than 30 seconds on my FB page. So I just cut and pasted the text and re-posted. For some strange reason you’re not allowed to put posts on facebook in order to get “Likes”. I couldn’t give a toss about “LIkes”, so why don’t they just take the freaking “Like” button away?

The funeral will be well supported. That will show support. The best Statesman who did so much for Scotland. A different place. Devolution. Independence support still increasing.
