56% for Yes with EU membership and they’d welcome us with open arms and fast – this must be the SNP strategy now

Today’s YouGov poll has 56% of people would vote for independence if it meant EU membership, while just 32% would vote No.

While the No majority without that, will get the mainstream headlines, the message for the SNP and the other pro-independence parties is clear.

In September 2020:

Tory List MSP, Dean Lockhart, helpfully took the time to remind us of the level of support for Scotland’s return to the EU by asking Mike Russell for confirmation of his claim that a former president of the EU had said to his face that Scotland would be able to join again.

Mike gave him two:

In August 2023:

SCOTLAND would “easily fulfil the criteria for joining the European Union”, according to a leading MEP who said he would “love” to see the country become a new member state.https://www.thenational.scot/news/19273900.independent-scotland-easily-join-eu-love-mep-says/

VP of the Green group in the European Parliament, German MEP Terry Reintke visited Scotland earlier this month to participate in discussions about Scotland’s continued cooperation with the EU. She said:

“If Scotland were to become an independent country, an accession procedure to the European Union would be much easier – as Scotland had previously applied the full acquis [EU statues book] already.”

Sylvie Bermann, one of France’s leading diplomats, and the former ambassador to the UK said that the EU would welcome the accession of an independent Scotland.

“The situation has changed because there’s been Brexit…Probably there would be some negotiation, but [Scotland joining the EU] would be good for Europe. There’s no reason why if there’s this referendum which is accepted that we shouldn’t want to have Scotland – we’ll be very happy.”

Fabian Zuleeg, chief executive of the European Policy Centre in Brussels, said “the mood on the EU side is rather positive” and suggested an independent Scotland might be able to conclude membership negotiations in “two to three years” – similar to Finland in the mid-1990s. Many leading MEPs from every corner of Europe have expressed support and said the process of accession would be smooth.

Later that year from the Scottish Greens:

50 politicians from across Europe have responded to Theresa May’s triggering of Article 50 by signing a letter claiming that an independent Scotland will be “most welcome as a full member of the European Union”.

The letter, an initiative of Scottish Green MSP Ross Greer and German Green MEP Terry Reintke, is addressed to Holyrood and signed by parties from across the political spectrum from the EU Parliament, national and regional parliaments, assemblies and senates. It also gives a commitment to assist an independent Scotland with a “swift, smooth, and orderly” application for European Union membership.

Last month Green MSPs voted for Scotland to have its say over the Tories’ Hard Brexit, giving the Scottish Government a mandate to seek permission from the UK government to hold an independence referendum.

Ross Greer MSP, the Scottish Greens’ external affairs spokesperson, said:

“With continuing uncertainty and an absolute lack of any clear plan from the UK government, what’s becoming clear is that there is a tremendous amount of goodwill from across the continent towards Scotland’s European aspirations. People in Scotland were told to vote against independence if they wanted to stay in the EU and now we know how wrong that was. Independence is the only way to secure a European future for Scotland.

“Furthermore, we were told that Spain would block an independent Scotland’s bid for EU membership and that we’d face being placed at the back of a mythical queue. Now we know that those No campaign arguments are not true. The only thing standing in Scotland’s way to forging links with Europe is the Westminster government. Our parliament has voted to give the people a choice over their own future and no Tory government at Westminster should stand in the way of that.”

      1. It is becoming influential. A lot of people, including quite a few Scots, are making accounts and posting there. With 10 million accounts, it doesn’t have anywhere near the reach of ‘X’ but it is possibly the new platform a lot of us have been looking for. I see artists like @coldwarsteve.bsky.social and authors especially, but influential bloggers too. At the moment a lot of people seem to be splitting their time to see how it goes. Of course, it could peter out as some have, but its worth making a presence and posting links, I think. I am there as @jrtomlin.bsky.social by the way.

  1. Pardon my suspicion this poll is not quite what it appears – There will have been regular polling on independence conducted for HMG but kept quiet for very obvious reasons, favourability continues to climb – The EU angle was always there in Scotland, so why publish now ?

There has long been a majority in England favouring IR2, reversal of Brexit, and investment in the NHS etc., and despite the numbers continuing to increase, both Tories and Labour have consistently ignored it – On English forums, opinion that UK politics had gone rogue and democracy was dead had been on the increase and growing ever angrier, England’s traditional political hegemony was already in deep trouble, then along comes two left feet Starmer…..

Labour desperately needs a headline diversion, and this may well be the start of it, the Scottish question…

  2. Given the revelations about Starmer’s propensity for accepting ‘gifts’, perhaps some independence supporters could buy him a kilt and bagpipe lessons.
