Prison population – back-to-front thinking from BBC Scotland to hide Scottish Government competence in maintaining 234 times more spare places

From BBC Scotland, two days ago:

Scotland’s prison population is now higher than it was before hundreds of prisoners were released early in a bid to ease overcrowding.

A total of 477 prisoners were let out early in June and July under an emergency scheme introduced by the Scottish government in response to a sharp rise in the number of people in jail.

In the week before the programme began in late June, the prison population sat at 8,232.

It has now reached 8,241 – raising questions about whether further releases will be needed.

See, stupid, that’s why they released some prisoners, to make sure they did not go above capacity.

What is the total capacity of Scotland’s prisons?

BBC Scotland claim it’s 8 007.1

From Audit Scotland in December 2023:

SPS has advised that as at November 2023 the extended operating capacity that the prison estate can accommodate is 8,475.2

So, 234 spare places?

I wonder, how are England’s prisons coping?

From BBC UK August 28, 2024:

There are fewer than 100 available spaces left across the male prison estate in England and Wales, the BBC understands.3

But, but, surely with 10 times the population, to be at least as well-placed as Scotland, they’d need 2 340 places, 234 times more. Scotland has 234 times as many spare prison places, pro rata.

  1. Yes, when I read this BBC Scotland piece it was the usual nasty, ignorant media gloating at what they saw as ANOTHER FAILURE BY THIS SNP GOVERNMENT.

  2. BBCScorchedland should refrain from seeking different ways of attacking the SNP Government and simply have ONE ”news” story each and every day with the headline

    ”SNP Government is CRAP !”

This would allow it to divest itself of expensive pseudo-journalists who are only recycling the same propaganda each and every day. Programs such as Misreporting Scotland and Kay ( with an ”E” ) need only broadcast a recorded version of ”SNP Government is Crap !” , thus freeing up resources to export to the Mothership in London .

  3. BBC Scotland, where propaganda always comes first. It’s been a long time since that outfit was regarded as trustworthy.

It’s a very slow grind, but every day due to sites like TUS and others, that people start to observe the bias and very selective reporting from BBC Scotland and then give up watching or listening to it.

  4. Aye, as stated by many, BBC journalists are puerile, ignorant and untrained for the reality of their profession, leavng their bizarre haverings exposed by TUS as absolute crap. Thanks John.

  5. 7,000 prisoners in Scotland. Male. 200 females. Half are neurodiverse with no support. Half are addicted to alcohol or drugs. They should be in total abstinence rehab facilities. Alcohol/drug are linked to crime and poverty. People cannot work and die younger.

The UK has the highest prison population in the EU.
