So-called Leftist Guardian celebrates Labour’s pension increase that wouldn’t pay for a cod fish fillet every day

There’s no mention in the Guardian’s report above of what that means per week – less than £8!

What could you get for that from Morrisons?

Birds Eye 4 Battered Cod Fish Fillets 440

£6.15

Great! you can have one but not every day, mum.

  1. This report will have been released at this time to counter the reaction against the withdrawal of Winter Fuel Payments for some pensioners. The data refer to the New State Pension, those of us on the older state pension, while we will get an increase will not receive as much as the £400 reported.

It is likely that this announcement might have some of the effect intended because pensioners were treated more generously that other people receiving benefits from the state, largely because pensioners tended to vote Tory.

In addition, as a whole, pensioners are one of the more affluent groups in society. There is, undoubtedly, a significant number of pensioners who are struggling for money, but many of us, with our final salary pensions and our home ownership are in far better financial condition than many of our children and grandchildren. And, many of us – willingly – provide support for them.

Benefits as a whole need significant improvements, wages and employment security require substantial boosts and soon. And, public services – mostly delivered by Councils – need a huge investment of cash, because the benefits in kind these provide mean that income per se is only part of the support for a decent standard of living.

If Labour manages to blunt some of the criticism of the Winter Fuel decision by this announcement, it really needs to start telling a better story of a good society rather than the miserable cliche laden ‘things will get worse before they get better with the vacuous – ‘black hole’, ‘tough’, ‘ruthless’, ‘hard choices’, ‘iron fiscal rules’ vacuities that its members spout.

  2. Tesco, during a cost of living crisis increased its profit 23/24 from £800 million by £1.6 billion, not too £1.6billion but by £1.6 billion.

Inflation is driven by excessive profiteering and they are all at it, being able to afford the essentials will be aspirational and we don’t even any bings left to scavenge coal to burn in fires we no longer have.

I said yesterday I think that the SNP needed to find the courage to tell westminster to take a hike, that’s no longer an aspiration, it’s urgent and they need to start campaigning.

1, Put a motion before the westminster parliament to remove parliamentary protection for ministers from prosecution for causing harm and death through avoidable policies. ( They arbitrarily decided to remove the pensioner heating which could kill 6,000 pensioners) There’s a lot more they can use.

2, Inform the people of Scotland that the Party intends to fight the next Holyrood GE seeking permission from the people Scotland to withdraw from the Treaty of Union. It’s not as if we don’t have enough reasons for doing so.

  3. While I agree with much that Alasdair MacDonald says, I would love to know the UK wide ratio of reasonably well off against poor pensioners (I include myself and my husband in the well off bracket because, although just above the limit that excludes us from any benefits, we manage) mainly because we swopped homes with our grandson on the eve of lockdown. I dread to think the state we’d be in now in a big detached house as opposed to this cosy, compact flat. I try not to worry too much about them.

Have just googled and it says 38.2% of households in Scotland are on track to have a pension that will provide a moderate income in retirement. That’s 1% less than the national average. Another document states 1 in 7 people (150,000) live in poverty in Scotland. This document, from Independent Age, ‘Not enough to live on’ was published in 2023. It’s worth a read.

  4. In the ongoing years of absence/refusal by the SNP, to free Scotland from the Foreign English Colonialist Dictators,

Liberation Scotland/Salvo have been hard at work, researching the legal way to bring an end to Scotland, as a Colonised Nation.

Soon, Liberation Scotland/Salvo will present our Case for the above, to the United Nations for their recognition, in what is a year-long process.

As have countless former Colonised Nations.

Liberation Scotland/Salvo also took steps to inform all those foreigners involved in Freeports/SEZs/Charter Cities

that they don’t have the authority of WE Sovereign Scots.

The end of this putrid ‘union’/Foreign English Jackboot on Scottish necks, can’t come soon enough.
