Child homelessness now staggering 58% higher in England than in Scotland after 17 years of SNP government

No cheap exploitative images of sad weans here

In the Guardian today:

Record homeless figures in England prompt calls to tackle ‘national scandal’. Latest housing data show 151,630 children in temporary accommodation – the most since records began. Shelter, the housing charity, said the government must “tackle the housing emergency head-on”.

From Shelter Scotland in a submission to the Scottish Parliament, January 2024:

We are in a housing emergency, and that requires an emergency response from government. A record 9,595 children trapped in temporary accommodation – up 130% since 2014.

All things being equal, England with 10 times the population might have been expected to have 10 times as many children in temporary accommodation or 95 950 but had 151 630. That’s 55 680 more than if they had an SNP Government, or 58% more.

  1. BBC Hootsmon……….

”Scotland falling behind on homelessness stats under SNP”.

  2. Do third sector organisations with missions that extend across the UK feel unable to make statements that (in terms) state the following truth and if so WHY?

‘The situation in (a UK nation with a government with only limited, devolved powers) may be bad but – based on statistical analysis – not nearly so bad as in England, the nation with a government with EVERY power to have avoided this bad in the first place and with EVERY power now to deliver the necessary solution.

‘It is the government of England in Westminster – the one with ALL the powers – the one which also substantially impacts the ability, the finances of (the nation with a government with only limited, devolved powers) – and so it is Westminster that ultimately is the source of the problem and also has the power to enable the solution.

‘All paths from wherever in the UK on social and economic policy matters lead to Westminster!’

Do the branches of the major UK-wide campaigning charities in for example Scotland lack understanding of how the UK state ACTUALLY WORKS? Surely the leadership of these organisations is not deliberately avoiding acknowledgement of the reality of where agency, specifically where enabling financial power, lies due to concerns about sustaining public perceptions outside England about the worth of the Union?

‘Fiscal rules’ that constrain improvements in the social fabric of England and by extension the rest of the UK are political choices, once made by the Tories and now by Labour. By contrast, the governments in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh have budgetary constraints long since set by statute.

The latter operate in a ‘rob Peter to pay Paul’ world: England’s government In Westminster DOES NOT!

Do the national branch offices of campaigning charities not understand this – or is it too sensitive an issue, is it not regarded as acceptable to admit this openly when there are national movements to dissolve this England-dominated Union?

  3. There are fewer youngsters in care in Scotland. Kinship payments. Children in need can stay within the family. Those coming out of care get extra educational support, affordable accommodation. They do not pay the Council tax. Youngsters can stay on for longer in foster care and get further support for more years.

Women who cohabit, the majority, do not have equal rights. There is little legal aid. They have to put in a claim within a year. It can cost £thousands in legal fees. Abused women have to live in dangerous situations. Or lose their house and home to become homeless and live in temporary accommodation. If women had equal rights and legal aid, which has to be paid back in any case, there would be less people in temporary accommodation. Women could claim what is their right. Less abusive situations. Without losing their home to live in temporary accommodation with their children.

In the South the Law has been changed so abused women can get legal aid and not lose the roof over their head. More practical, less distressing and less costly, than temporary accommodation.

  4. 10,000 children safe in temporary accommodation for a short time. Or children being in an abusive situation for years. Obviously it is distressing but they have priority for housing needs. Getting help from agencies. Women who cohabit should have equal rights. Not be left behind and abused. Have to fight for their rights for years at a massive legal cost.

Renting agencies illegally charge people 6 months rent and deposit. Even those with good credit. Hard for those on a limited budget to find accommodation. Especially abused women and children with less income.
