Four weeks in and Labour Work and Pensions Secretary doing nothing for BBC Scotland’s struggling carer

Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, responsible for reserved benefits across the UK

From BBC Scotland today:

Brian Closs is a full-time carer for his two autistic teenagers and has been receiving income support with child benefit, carers allowance and child tax credits.

But these benefits are being phased out by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) as part of a “managed migration” to universal credit payments.

Money is already tight for Brian, 55, but in order to receive his new benefit he has to claim and then wait more than a month for his new payment.

The controversial “five-week wait” means he will fall further into debt unless he asks for an advance from DWP, which he will have to pay back reducing his benefits for a year.

Clearly an injustice and if this was a devolved matter we’d see a report with a picture of the SNP minister responsible and even the First Minister, looking guilty. In the text, they’d get repeated mentions and the opposition parties would all get a paragraph or two, to damn the SNP.

In this BBC Scotland report on a UK-reserved benefit, there’s no sign nor mention of the Labour UK Government nor of Liz Kendall or Sir Keir.

Shouldn’t they get a mention? Is it worth complaining?

  1. Atrocious journalism IMHO when you are left to assume that when they apply under the new scheme the original is cancelled, rather than the authors ( Hope Webb and Emma Clifford Bell ) explaining clearly why this is happening….

I did chuckle at ‘ But these benefits are being phased out by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) as part of a “managed migration” to universal credit payments ‘ – The DWP has been bass-ackward in what is managed since Ian Drunken Smith was throwing his abundant ego around there… It’s not the staff’s fault their overlords have been total nincompoops, but it’s a bit too early to say in the case of Liz Kendal…

How difficult would it be to advise the cancellation will take effect in 5 weeks so get your skates on… ID(iot)S has much to answer for…
